I coach 8th grade football. I've had the same kids for 3 years now. (Started with them at 6th grade, 7th, and now this year) I have two solid QBs QB1 - Good accuracy, fast runner, knows the offense...little quiet though QB2 - Very short, good runner, makes mental errors, great team leader. Both kids are excellent kids. Respectfull, hard working. Every year it's been the same thing. QB1 beats out QB2 for the starting job. Better arm, better athlete. Last weeks scrimmage. QB1 has to miss a practice for a funeral. QB2 has an excellent practice. I tell QB2 he gets to start the scrimmage this week. (Keep in mind, opening day, QB1 is my guy) I tell QB1 at the next practice QB2 is starting, that it had nothing to do with missing practice, it was because QB2 deserved a shot. I get a call the next day at work...QB1's Dad, nice guy...but, he says to me "Hey coach...so my son comes home and says to me, ""Thanks for making me go to that stupid funeral, now I'm the 2nd string QB" You can imagine how the conversation went from there. Geez, dam kids.

Here's a parent story you'll like.
We have a guy who has talent but has had injury problems. He didn't know how to push himself in offseason conditioning because the knee was always an excuse for him. Early in th offseason he missed a lot of sessions and half-a$$ed a lot of those he attended.
The HC decided that he was going to cut him loose if things didn't improve. He called the kid's mom and politely told her that and asked for a meeting with the HC, mom, and the player.
They sit down and coach tells her the situation. Mom looks at son and tells him, "You need to stop being such a b#tch.".
He'll start at 5 tech Fridey night.

Some parents are actually pretty cool about stuff. They "get it". If their kid, who is a good athlete is being an idiot in practice, I've had parents tell me "Bench him if you need to"
