we have a class period in Texas schools where we get our players. It counts as a PE credit on the kids transcripts its very useful for watching film, special teams, weight lifting during the season offseason strength and speed training during offseason
what other states have this and for those of you who don't how do you handle off season training? Or are their ways your schools have creatively scheduled weight training classes?

NJ has nothing. Weight training is after school supervised by coaches for no additional money.

For us in tx, we may have upperclassmen having to choose a requirement over athletics pretty soon. Athletics only counts as a credit the first 2 years, the last 2, it counts as nothing. Our schools are about to go to 28 credits to graduate, as opposed to the current 26, so kids might have to choose if they fail 2 of their credits any time in hs.

Thats our wonderful state senators who are anti public school and anti athletics

In NC most schools have it. All of the best programs have in school weight training. We offer it both semesters 3rd and 4th period. Most of our kids get in it. We have a few scheduling conflicts and some simply cant get in for other classes and they stay and lift after school

In NE there is nothing across the board. Some schools do, some do not. We are a 7-12 building and have a JH athletic period at the end of the day (last period). This is good because varsity coaches can work with their sport (all do except track) at the JH level. For Varsity athletes, we have a 0 hour (before the school day) where athletes come in and do lifting/conditioning. They receive class credit. We also have a wt. training/conditioning class first hour. All FB players are in those two classes (JR-SR generally 0, Fr-So generally 1st, though there are a few JR-SR in 1st hour). 1st hour would be our athletic period, but we have some conflicts during that time, so we created the 0 period a few years ago. It works out well for us.

Missouri has not athletic period. My district offers weights and they allow two classes a day to be specific for athletics. Not all the same sport, but you can get a little more detailed in those classes. I teach summer school weights and in my section the principal allows me to have up to 60 athletes. I count some two sports kids as basketball, track, baseball, or wrestling so nobody complains.

New Jersey does not have athletic periods but we are allowed contact with our players all summer long unlike a lot of states. So we could have double sessions all summer long if we choose to.

Not too many in Kansas have an athletic period. In Oklahoma it may vary from district to district. Don't know much about any other states.
