Coaches, What are your thoughts with regards to having an offensive/defensive day during the week and splitting practice time on Wednesdays? I am considering having an offensive day on Monday, Defensive day on Tuesday, and splitting on Wednesday.

We've done something similar in the past, and the way we did it was go mainly offense on Monday, with a 20-minute defensive period (either all individual time, or all team-defense.) Then go mainly defense on Tuesday, with the final 30 minutes of practice being team-offense and situational offense (3rd down, goal-line).
Monday: 1.5 hours of offense (indy and team) 0.5 hour defense (team-D) Tuesday: 1.5 hours of defense (indy and team) 0.5 hour offense (team-O for 20 minutes, 3rd down/goal line for 10 minutes) Wednesday: 1 hour offense 1 hour defense
* 2 Special Teams segments each day, special situations on Thursday

I'm assuming you don't platoon. I've done an offensive emphasis day and defensive day. Wednesday was refinement of game plan. Look to eliminate or adjust anything on Monday or Tuesday, don't wait until Wednesday. Hay's in the barn by then.

We don't platoon and we started using a similar schedule this season. Previously, we had always done a M - Offense, T - Defense, W - Offense, T- Defense schedule. This year, we did M - Offense, T - Defense, W- 1/2 Offense, 1/2 Defense and then on Thursday we do a special teams review followed by 2-minute O, then D and team O and D. We mix in special teams every day.

Small school (45 players). We practice special teams (2 each day), offense and defense everyday. For offense, we rep particular schemes each day. Monday's-zone schemes including inside zone (fast screens off the zone), outside zone (speed sweep out of multiple sets), sprint out concepts (zone blocking) and a TE throwback screen off of sprintouts. All scripts only include Monday scheme.
Tuesday's-gap schemes/quick game. We run GT (q), power (q) read/alley, trap/tackle trap (game planned if needed), counter (guard and fullback pull out of wildcat), boot action off of pull scheme, quick pro: pump-playaction off of fast screens, hitch, slants, shoots. Offensive scripts only include Tuesday scheme.
Wednesday-man scheme/dropback concepts/screens: we run wham (q), stick/draw, 7 dropback concepts, 2 different dropback screens and a few concept/screen combinations. Offensive team script includes all schemes.
Thursday-mini game. We start practice with KOR and 1st offensive play is a 3rd med-long. We always punt next play even though we complete the pass. Defense reps 10 plays then punt return next. Offense runs 10 base plays then kicks extra pts. We then do kickoff and defense does another 10 plays. Offense does another 5 plays of NASCAR mode and another 5 of wildcat. We then kick fgs from hashes. Next we do end of half/game/goalline for defense then same for offense including 2 pts. Then team wrap up. Friday-execute what we practiced all week.

Interesting. We are almost exact opposite of most who have posted.
Monday: Scouting/Lift (40), Kick game (30), Offense (30), Defense: Align & Assign (30)
Tuesday: Offense gets 10 minutes more than D. For both sides we work, Indy, Group, Team. Typically Defense will only go Indy/Team so we can have longer sessions of both.
Wednesday: Same as Tuesday, but flip O/D
Thursday: Kick game (40), Offense (20), Defense (20). Offense works red zone & 2 minute. Defense works 2 minute and 3rd down.
One reason that I like splitting the days, is that the gameplan seems to "stick" with the kids better when they get to rep it 2 days instead of 1. I realize the times may equal, but we've had more success splitting the days.

My varsity team platoons so they go offense and defense everyday. At the freshman level we would work on special teams and tackling everyday. Monday would be offense. Tuesday defense. Wed is the walk thru. Thursday is game day. Friday is film day. Saturday(now Sundays) is lifting and conditioning day. We lifted M,T,F,S.

We're in a small school, so here is how our week looks: Monday: JV game, all but main varsity players (about 15) are playing JV. Watch 2 game film (ours from Friday and one of our upcoming opponent. Blocking schemes & Strength/Conditioning.
Tuesday: Team Defense; D position breakdown; turnover circuit, 2 Special teams and a touch of O.
Wednesday (church night, have to be out early): Team O; O position breakdown, review of D gameplan, 2 specials.
Thursday: Pregame practice (Team O & D, all specials, certain situations, 1 more gamefilm, JV Strength/conditioning.
This works for us because of our co-op and #'s.
