I would like some input on how you organize football practices (from 2/3 day - end of season).
At our school, we have several (6-7) players playing both sides of the ball. We run a pro style attack and play a 4-3 on defense. Our HC and DC like to run multiple formations and defensive sets. Consequently, the assistant coaches must spend the majority of our time in a teaching mode (new blocking scheme, def. front for opposing teams off/def).
We have been successful with this approach in the last two years (17 - 4). However, I am concerned that the players are burned out toward the end of the season due to the excessive time in practice (HC always has a new play to put in). In fact, we did not leave at a decent hour until a time change forced us to do so (daylight savings). I noticed that that our offensive performance did not drop due to less practice.
In a nutshell, I am not convinced that longer practices or more plays necessarily lead to more victories. I would appreciate your input.

MCRSA you are on the right trail.
Multiple offense and defense is important, but it must be player friendly. If your players can not learn it in less than 2 hours, then you have already lost their attention. Keep practice moving.
Most of your offense and defense should be in by two-a-days. If it is truly a multiple offense and defense then adding plays should be easy after learning the basics.

I agree completely. Defensively, we rarely add anything after 2-a-days unless it's a wrinkle off of something that we already do. They'll almost never involve new skills. Even if there's a coverage, for example, that we're planning to use for one specific opponent we introduce it in 2-a-days. That way when we put it in for that one game the players have seen it before.
