You are either coaching - or letting it happen

Does any head coaches present/get a gift for assistant coaches at the end of the season? This is my first year and it didn't happen at my only other job. I have been pretty generous through the season (baby gift, wedding gift, picking up most beer tabs). Is that sufficient?

I am an assistant and I would say that's more than enough. My HC always sends the coach's wives a gift at the end of the season to say thanks. Just an idea.

I've never been given any gift from the HC after season in five years. Don't think its really neccessary.
For baseball, though, I would always get a gift cart (some restaurant) for the guy who helped me out during the season. Only our head JV and Varsity position coaches are paid positions so the assistants were volunteer guys so I wanted to get them something to show my thanks.

Some do some don't. It is usually money from a booster, not from the HC's personal home budget. At my current stop all assistants get something. One year it was $100.00 cash, one year it was a $50.00 gift card to a restaurant. Again, the money came from boosters. One place I worked the coordinators got $400.00 at the end of the season. Most places, nothing. I certainly don't think the head coach can afford to do things like that himself.

I agree that you've done enough already, because I'm sure there will be more beer tabs to pick up at clinics and such!

If your assistants are paid coaches. No gift is necessary.

No gift is needed, but our head coach always picks up a dinner tab at our coaching clinic as a way to say thank you.

I always try to give our assistants a coaching/leadership/ife-oriented book... something that might help them improve as a coach or teacher, as a leader, as a man, or as a husband or father.

Just take them out for a meal specifically as a thank you. And invite the wives.

I have not given a post-season gift before, but have always been generous with buying meals/drinks and paying for some clinics or camps.
This year, I am giving them both (we're only a frosh staff) a mug with a picture of the three of us on it. It was right after a win against disliked rival and we are all looking happy. It isn't a very cool gift, but should be a memorable one.

I don't think there is a set tradition of doing this but its more about the HC and what he feels is right. When I ran a program I was as generous as I could be with coaching attire- shorts, shirts, pullovers and sweatshirts generally using a portion of money we raised- I also took care of our trainer as well as got a shirt for each administrator. Out of my own pocket I always paid for a meal at a spring clinic (last couple of years it was the dinner buffet at the Rio in Vegas) and drinks and meals here and there during the year. I am now a freshman HC and purchased the staff customized NIKE messenger bags and will take them all out for a post season meal. I also spring for meals during the summer and the season but all of my assistants own very successful companies and they insist on buying for the staff occassionally as well (one is a fireman who also owns a Bar & Grill in town and he often insists on picking up meal and bar tabs so his wait staff get very handsome tips) .
I think the most important thing is in every way you can express your appreciation to them and that does not need to be your spending money in fact simple sincere thank you's are more important anyway.
