The Miller Tire Blue Devils, although not dominating the way we were in 2010, continue to play just well enough to win -- or at least like last week, not lose! Yesterday we faced the Design Development Spartans, whom we'd beaten 19-14 Oct. 8 with a last minute TD.
This time had a number of long runs called back for holding penalties, and were penalized several times for encroachment and false starts -- probably our most penalized game. We finally broke thru early in the 2nd half with a 25 yard TD on a pass play we'd never done a full contact rep of because of our limited practice facilities starting in mid Oct. It was a crossing pattern between twins right, designed to pick off the inside defender at the line of scrimmage and free Marquis Jimenez in the corner. In this case the Spartans weren't in press coverage so the pick wasn't there, but the crossing action freed him anyway. We had planned to have QB David Kollbeck play only the 1st half because he had a cold, but we had kept him in after the scoreless 1st half. We converted the try on Marquis's run and went up 7-0.
However, Erim Pelinkovic's kickoff was fielded well by the Spartans and returned for a TD. Our lack of coverage of kickoffs has been a recurring problem this season. However, coaches Kenny and Eric don't like to sacrifice Erim's good foot by having him kick short.
The difference in the game turned out to be Matt Juarez's interception of the Spartans' pass for the try. The Spartans pass more than any other team in the Pee Wee Div., and Matt's CB play plus our pass rush shut them down. We play him wide, to the outside of and close to their WR, not where I would choose to station him, but he has the speed to cover if he can see the play in front of him this way.
So we're 5-0-1, giving up the fewest points per game, and will close out with games vs. the bottom 2 teams in the division. I don't see next week's game vs. the cellar dwelling Dr. David Stevens Steelers as much of a contest, but the following week against the Jimmy Ryan's Ramblers could be a bit of a problem. You never know who'll be missing the Sat. after Thanksgiving, and the Ramblers, who appear to have switched over primarily to UBSW offense, have a bye the intervening week.
