I ask about their background in football, what positions and schemes are they comfortable with. It is also important to know what they are not comfortable coaching. I ask what amount of time they expect and want to put in. Generally, I also want to know if they can fit other needs in our program (strength & conditioning, video editting, etc) I have found that it usually takes about 2 minutes to find out if the candidate knows football, from there it is all about how well their personality and work habits fit with our staff.

I'm sure that you can handle the X's & O's questions as they pertain to your system.
Here are some potential questions to see how the candidate will fit in at your school...
What do you like to do to relax? (Hobbies/interests)
Do you plan to continue your education? If so, in what area?
New Teacher: Did you enjoy college? Why? Which courses were the most difficult for you? Were you involved in extracurricular activities?
Experienced Teacher: Tell me about your current position?
New Teacher: Tell me about your student teaching experience?
What do/did you like most? What would you change? What would your supervisor(s)/principal tell me about you?
Why us?
How do you view your role as a faculty member? What do you do to show the teachers that you are "one of them?"
How do you monitor the academic progress of your athletes?
What is the connection between school rules and team rules?
When/how do you communicate with parents? How do you handle upset parents?
How do you handle sharing players with other sports? What are your offseason/summer requirements?
What other sports are you comfortable coaching?

Great list gunslinger! I would also get them up on the board and explain to you what they ran at the last school he was at and ask him to explain how he went about coaching his guys. It is important that a guy show you if he can be a good teacher.

I'm helping the new head coach at my high school with assistant interviews, but neither of us are knowledgable in what to ask really. Sadly both of us were hired with a basic interview with school districts in dire need of coaches. So basically we didn't get a true interview given to us. What should the head coach ask in general? I know many times AD's do this, but we are in a transition there as well. Thanks for any help beforehand. 1) whats your availablity off season, inseason? 2) what is your teaching style? discipline philosophy? 3) Are you reliable, responsible (coaching contract is a very good idea, spell out the expectations, leave nothing to question) 4) Can you be loyal even if philosophies dont match up? loyalty is pretty daggone important.

I would add that their position knowlege and football experience are a lot less important than their willingness to learn new information and enthusiasm as long as you know what you want taught.

here are some more...
(1) Tell me about yourself (good open ended question; just let him talk as long as he wants; you'll find out quite a bit)
(2) What is the most important characteristic of an assistant coach?
(3) How do you begin to teach execution?
(4) What is your individual period like?
(5) What are your coaching aspirations?
(6) What are your priorities?
(7) Where do you see yourself fitting in to the program?
