In Utah, we have 4 'regions' of 5A ball.
In general, 4 of the 6 schools in each region go to the playoffs. All of this makes sense as there are not that many schools in Utah.
In our state, pre season games do not count towards your region record. So, a team could conceivably lose all 5 of its pre season games and then win its region. So a 5-5 team could be a number 1 seed in the playoffs. Heck, this year, we have a team that is 3-7 and they are the #2 seed in their region.
Either way, to screw with things even more, when teams are vying for the 4th and final spot in their region, a rule is in effect that you cannot be eliminated from the playoffs due to a head to head result. So, in order to solve this, they schedule a play-in game between 2 teams who have already met in the regular season to play each other again.
I'll explain it this way if that doesn't make sense.
Team A, B and C. Team A and B have both beaten C in region play. Both have 2 wins in region going into the final game. Team C has 1 win going into the final game. Team A and B are playing each other so one is going to end the season with only 2 region wins.
Team C wins final region game and now plays the loser of the A-B game in order to find out who gets the 4th seed and the playoff spot, even though A and B have already beaten C in head to head. Because both teams have 2 wins in region, they are considered tied in the standings.
Now, even more info is that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams can be determined by head to head. The rule is you can not be eliminated by head head. So in order to solve this problem, you play a head to head.
Can someone explain to me how this benefits team B who won the regular season match up?
I hope this makes sense because it confuses the hell out of me.
