Well here we go again...Been at this school for 15 yrs 5 as HC--no real tradition to speak of except losing! started turning it around, then 13 kids (mostly skill players quit) 3 seasons ago. Been rebuilding again this year have a bright outlook, with 1 Sr and 15 Jrs starting in various positions. Well since April I have had 10 Sophs (frosh last yr) quit--lost backup QB today. We are down to 3 upperclassmen DB's -------now the basketball team has 25 upperclassmen, only 2 play football!!! The basketball coach tells his guys to play they say they are afraid to get hurt--------------------------------------ow well enough venting thanks for listening

I don't know about your school, but the place I was at last had a policy that if a kid quit a sport, he could not play the next sport (i.e. they quit football, can't play basketball).

I feel for you- I lost both my projected starting guards this week- quit after completing summer work and camp and lost a sr. back up TE s well. I've realized with this generation there is absolutely no shame at all in being a quitter and most parents don't have a problem with it either. Life is tough enough as it is and it's even tougher when you look for excuses instead of working to create answers.

We had a rule about doing it in the same season. A kid quit baseball to run track, I was a track assistant. I didn't want to let him do it, but the baseball coach gave in and said it was okay with him so the kid was allowed to slide. Interesting idea about making it carry over to the next season though.

We've got numbers issues as well. 15 sophomores and 9 frosh. With the new directive of having a sophomore team & a frosh team, we're really scrambling. Official practice starts tomorrow so we're hoping we'll pull in more sophs & frosh BUT even if we pull 5 each, that's still cutting it close.

Don't get me started on basketball and baseball players who are so talented in their sport that they play it year round and then can barely crack the starting line-up! After losing our QB (spring) and our MLB (Summer) to other schools - we had a Great first day of 2-a-days! I DO Feel for you guys but don't let it get you down - focus on the guys you have and make them feel like they're the best players ... on your team - oh, wait a minute, they ARE the best players on your team! Hang in there, men!

Keep up the good work, murf.... there MUST be something in the water! Lost 2 more today ( we're a private Christian school) and 2 starters called and said they can't come back because their parents can't afford our school. We have the usual need (TRUE need!) financial aid that won't help them because they are low-middle income. Great kids - hate to lose anyone but these two hurt. Having said that, WE HAD ANOTHER GREAT PRACTICE! I'm trying to follow my own advice. Today I gave a devotion about trials revealing character (as opposed to "building" character). That makes 5 starters we've lost so far. I know, I know, Coach em' Up!

After pract I read them the Shakespear quote on band of bros. and told them about the true battle of Thermopalaye (SP?) we are down to 36 incl frosh----so just keep keepin on and the true warriors will stay

This thread has helped me guys. We don't get to start practice until Monday of next week and I am incredibly nervous. Going into my second year as a head coach with a program that hasn't won a game for the past two seasons and kids with a lack of a home life and a huge lack of discipline I don't know what to expect. I've been on the horn talking to the guys and it looks like we will have approximately 30-32 kids out (compared to 22 at the start of last season ending with 19) but we don't have any depth and I don't know who I can count on. What do some of your guys do to try and keep things fun for the kids. In my day fun came on Friday nights and as the coaches ripped you a new one you realized that they were getting you ready to have fun on Friday's as you win (although you hated the chewing at the time). This generation doesn't think like that. What can I do to motivate them and get them to believe in themselves. Most of them have worked at weights and conditioning in the summer and I believe that I can get them motivated for Aug. 31st, but what can I do to keep them from folding their tents in midgame, or from practice to practice? Any ideas (aside from the obvious answer, "win")? As much as it sucks to know that some of you deal with the same issues at leat we can learn from one another.

We all build monuments in the kids we teach, coach, help and raise.
I believe life is about a journey. Our life depends really on how we overcome the challenges we face, not at an ambiguous destination at which we arrive at.
I just left a school to finally arrived back at my alma mater(played for two years and coached for six at this place). It was what I always wanted. I changed careers finished a Master's program at nights and on the weekends, paid off bills (so we could live at a lower income), even bought a house right down the street from the school.
When I received my teaching certificate I had to move to get my first job, then I came back but continued to work in what I thought was a lesser school. I was excited to be able to now ride my bike to practice instead of drive for 30 minutes.
Now I have arrived. Everything I worked for, only now; I really doubt if I made the correct choice. This is the lowest talent pool I have ever seen at my alma mater. I am coaching a position that I have no clue about and I am frustrated. I miss the relationships with the last school. I coached Oline at that school and everyone knew that I was a good coach, but now I have doubts in my abilities and my current situation.
Point of the matter is, whether it is a losing tradition, a group of irrate parents, kids who don't show up or nine million other pitfalls we face; it is all good. We have to take the good with the bad and realize that we do make a difference and we do matter to the ones who count. Last time I checked not one of us woke up today wondering how we could ruin someone's life or try to lose a football game. If we show up, care for the kids and put our best foot forward in the best interest of the team, we cannot help but to succeed.
The only real disparity in how we judge our success is by how our society measures it and what we truly deem success. I have known a lot of coaches who were winners, but truth of the matter is they were jerks and had miserable situations at home. Am I that type of person or coach? No, and winning is not why I do it either. I do it for the kids, so they might think better of themselves and have a better chance in life.
An acqaintance of mine, passed away yesterday after a six year battle with a rare form of cancer. He was 39 and had six kids who were all school age. I hate to mention it, but when I heard about it two things crossed my mind 1) what about the wife and especially the kids and 2) he left a most powerful mark on this world and built monuments in his children that will be around long after the fact.
I don't care if we as a coaches win or lose or if kids quit on us. Sure, we have "some" ownership in that, but what I hear in reading your posts is that you are a lot like me, is that you care for the kids you coach and the school you work at. And in the end, aside from giving a great effort (100%, 100% of the time) you are a success and the seeds you have planted will change people's lives forever.
We never arrive in life, because we are driven to help kids and to coach and therefore we will always be on a journey. Good luck coaches, please let me know how your seasons go and if there is anything I might do to help.
PS: If winning is all that matters, then what do you have after you lose?

Remember to not worry about the ones that are not there and focus on the ones that are.
However, that still seems like a large number of kids dropping out the last 3-4 years. Do they seem to drop after moving from JV to Varsity? Are they really dropping or like in our area, transferring (recruited) to another school? Have you asked the kids why? Is it due to family, jobs, academics, peer pressure, playing time, or just don't want to work hard? I was in a similar situation about 10 years ago, fighting a losing tradition and player apathy. It was hard work but very rewarding when we got it turned around in 5 years.

What do you think turned it around for you guys?? Off season work. I think by instilling a hard work ethic during the off seasons (weights, conditioning, 7on7, camps, etc.), the kids became less reluctant to give into their previous expectations of being everyone's homecoming game (my 1st year we played in 6 homecoming games!). We constantly stressed that they were special for what they were doing, and we did at the beginning take the us-against-them mentality.
Anyway, good luck with the season and keep believing.

Not trying to put any one out here but I did a devotion for our teachers this morning (Christian School) and my goal was to encourage them as we are about to start classes. With the trials some of us have already experienced I thought I would simply offer a little of that encouragement to ALL of the teachers on this board. Remember, as coaches, we are all teachers, and therefore BLESSED!
Why Teach?
“ Now each of you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in all of the Church, GOD has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, and third teachers." I Corinthians 12:27-28
Are Teachers Important?
“(they) are worthy of a Double Honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.” I Timothy 5:17
Remember gentlemen, as coaches (teachers) you are important, and you are blessed!

LOL ouch actually longer than that I was a Sr when he was in 8th grade-----they beat us my Jr year 21-17 and my Sr yr 7-6----they were always loaded and back then they only had one team form each district go to the playoffs. My Jr year we finished ranked #2 in the state Sports writers poll and didnt even go to the playoffs
