Here is a situation/question that I would like to pose and get some feedback on. I just finished my first year as a head coach and it was also my first year at the school I am currently at. My dilema involves the basketball teams at our school, both boys and girls. Our summer lifting/speed/agility program just began for our football players, and our weightroom is basically on a balcony in our main gym. Good sized wieght room, but it is open to the gym, no front wall holding in sound, music, banging weights. This is where my comflict occurs. Both basketball coaches have started their summer camps and shooting days. Well, when my football players are lifting, I as well as the kids like to have the music cranking. The basketball coaches complain that it interupts their coaching and the kids concentration (since there is no wall in the weight room to keep the noise in) I explained to the coaches that for football, this is pre-season and for basketball it is off-season, and thus our season starts in a couple months, whereas their seasons start in 6 months. My point being, this is our main time to be training. The boys basketball coach (who is also the A.D.) says the seasons and how close a season is to beginning doesn't make a difference and the music shouldn't be loud. It bothers me because during basketball season, my kids lift in the weight room without the radio in order to be considerate to the bball teams. I would think the gesture would be returned. I obvioulsy have to watch what I say because the bball coach is the A.D. Any thoughts on this?

Tough situation. Thats exactly why A.Ds should not be coaches, because it is a conflict of interest. I know there will be disagreements on this fact!! But it is what it is a conflict of interest. since you already spoke with the AD about the situation. I dont know what else you can do. Put up an imaginary wall and play on.

I think it is a matter of necessity. Is it necessary that the music be cranking or is it just a luxury? I would think it is a luxury. How would you feel if you were holding a winter workout and the basketball team was cranking music in the gym and you couldn't communicate to your players? Sometimes you have to sacrifice some luxuries for other sports, that's just the way it goes. I would say it isn't worth going to battle with the AD or the other coaches for, so I would just turn it down a bit. By the way I also prefer to have the music cranking in the weight room

I agree with coachpoe. I do think you're in the right, but I also think something that can be easily fixed by turning down volume isn't something major enough to cause conflict with the AD.

Build a wall. If this is out of the question, find another time - I hate to say it but you aren't going to win this one as the Bball HC is your boss.

Thanks for the input...I agree, it isn't a big deal...and I didn't mean to make it sound that way..the thing is, it isn't even playing that loud, I mean, we use a regular radio that has a cd player..it isn't even a stereo sound system like some weight rooms have....I think my major beef is the comments that they make about it not even being our season yet, when in fact, it is technically our season...whereas with them, it is technically the off-season, plus, when we do have our winter practices and they have actual in-season practice, I make sure to keep everything at a nice easy tone...but yeah guys, I know, this isn't a battle to go to war over...I appreciate the input, and thanks....KEEP IT CRANKING GUYS!!!!!
