The Canadian Football season started last night and continues tonight on ESPN3.
I strongly advise that you watch as much as you can. Canadian football is dynamic, innovative, and entertaining. There is much to learn. Also, their game has some things that could really improve the American game.

I love watching the CFL...I am Canadian though.
I think the American game would be way more exciting if they used Canadian motion rules. I would also like to see a 20 second playclock in the American game. I think 20 yard endzones also make the Canadian game more exciting because the deep pass threat remains in the redzone. Maybe one day.

Like Steelhawk I'm Canadian too so I get to see a lot of the CFL on TV. I used to never watch the CFL, but about 10 years ago I started watching it again.
I like the flow of the Canadian rules, the unlimited motion, and the wider, longer field. But there are still some real structural problems that make it real gimmicky. For example, I don't like the 1-point touchback rule (the rouge as we Canadians call it), or the goalposts near the goalline, or the no yards rule on punt and KR.

Alright, somebody has to say it- I can't stand Canadian ball. To me, three downs=no running game-some game other than football. The unlimited motion rules remind me of a bunch of kids playing sandlot. Sorry, I've tried it and it's not for me.

What do you mean no running game? Hamilton ran the ball last night out of the pistol quite effectively.
I'm not a big fan of motion even in our game, but it's actually quite well choreographed in the Canadian game.
Three downs also forces you to be a much more aggressive play-caller. A friend of mine who called games in the Canadian league said its actually much harder than in the American game because you have less margin for error.
What I like the most about the Canadian game is the creativity it forces, both on defense and on offense.

We have a player there and it's better than no football but I can't watch it too closely or for too long. Just don't like it.

My big complaint is the new punt rule. WTF is that? What about those end-of-game puntfests? How are those affected? I love the onside man though.

I think John Jenkins coached in the CFL for a year or so. Conredge Holloway was the QB in Toronto and they ran the run n shoot.

I'll join fantom. It's a different game.
I enjoy it for what it is, but it's not American Football.
So please don't disprespect our game by telling us we should change it to be like your's.

haven't seen canadian football in many years, so i don't really know what they do.
"agressive" these days seems to be a synonym for "throw the ball".
i'm probably a little older than some on here, but to me, if you don't line up under the center some and run the football, it ain't really football. it's just basketball on a football field.
just my opinion.

The unlimited motion rules remind me of a bunch of kids playing sandlot. Sorry, I've tried it and it's not for me. Fred Reid led the league last year with 1400 yards rushing. That's a pretty good total in any league. I am Canadian, and have played in the CFL. In speaking with the Americans that play in the league, its simply a different game. There have been many CFL'ers that have tried to go to the NFL and have mixed success. It has happened the other way as well. The bigger field, one less down and unlimited motion make it a challenge. Also, add the one-yard off the LOS rule and it is difficult for d-Lineman to adjust. The American game needs more precision and quickness given the confined space, while the Canadian game allows for more improvisation and outright speed because of the space. Simply different. Throw in the unpredictable weather, and it is always fun to watch. Watch the Rider/Eskimos game tonight. Sounds like there may be a thunderstorm before the game.

1400 yards rushing is not that impressive when they play 18 regular season games...
I like the CFL for some of the pass game concepts but I do get bored of run, pass, punt.... Some of the worse football is in the CFL as they have a shortage of good QBs.
That said if the two teams are playing well it can be very exciting.

New rules are implemented every year. Suggesting that the game evolve is not disrespecting it. For example, the first legal forward pass in American football took place in 1906...was that change disrespectful? I love the American game too....maybe moreso then the Canadian game, but that doesn't mean the American game can't improve.

I don't think that anybody here intended to disrespect the US Game. (Canadians are Americans too, they inhabit North America)
The US game has undergone rule changes throughout its history. There are some things about the Canadian game that I do not like, but what I do like is the longer and wider field. I also like the hashes.

I am a big fan of the CFL and wish I had cable so I could watch some games. I honestly think it would be a blast to coach in Canada, but maybe that's because I'm an offensive guy. I also love how a game that started as roughly the same thing has evolved so very differently.

I've been to some games in Montreal 10 years ago... Fans in the stands wore t-shirts with: "our balls are biggers than yours" written on it...
Canadian and French Canadian are very proud of THEIR football!

Canadian football is a different brand of football. Iv coached both American and Canadian football, I wouldnt say either is better or worse, just different. Canadian 20 second playclock is a better element in my opinion. I find the NFL tempo to be slow in relation to college football and Canadian football. This time of the year Canadian football is great because its the only football on TV. Its exciting and the creativity is 2nd to none.

Somehow I can't imagine Devin Hester kicking the ball back out after he catches a missed FG, lol. Crazy last play of the game.

I love watching the cfl game. to me it is a fun watch. to compare it to u.s. football is apples and oranges.
however you can learn a few things some teams are very innovative in the pass game and the run game especially adding wrinkles to the inside zone.
and to the older gentleman who said you have to be under center and run the ball for it to be real football. similar statements were made about the modern t formation (under center) when people began getting away from the single wing, the notre dame box, etc. shotgun football predates any "under center" football.
football is football is football.

Well, if you go way back, under center football predates shotgun football predates under center football predates shotgun football.

I agree with many others, the three down rule is a major no-no in my book. All of the other different rules are more than fine to me. Just a different style/brand of football basically. Again the three down rule SUCKS!
I watch the CFL games on the NFLN weekly and enjoy them.
