Here is something interesting that happened to my team this past Friday. We played an away game and lost 21-19. Had a few opportunities that we did not cash in on (missed field goal, missed PAT, missed 2 pt conversion) and I am not one to blame a loss on officials, but this takes the cake, so please bear with as I vent, I will get to the question at the end of the post. At the end of the game, the penalty differential was amazing...we had 14 penalties for 155 yards, the opposing team had 5 for 45 yards. It always seemed that our penalties came at the most inoportune times as well (have the opponents in 3rd and forever, incomplete pass and some dumb penalty comes out) Anyway, as the game is halfway through the 4th and we need a defensive stop, we get the team in a 3rd and long, they run option and our defensive end absolutely destroys the QB, ball comes out, running back recovers to force a 4th down,...we are going to get the ball back with a chance to put together a 2 minute drill to win the game. Well, low and behold, the head official throws a flag for roughing the passer on our defensive end. I said he is considered a running back in option and the hit is perfectly legal....he says no way, it was unneccesary to hit him so hard...my guy did not lead with his helmet or hit the QBs head in any way...needless to say, they ran the clock out, game over. Well, I find out today that the head official has some ties to the school we lost to. His son was a football, wrestling, and baseball coach at the school for 4 or 5 years (this is his 1st year not coaching at the school). To me, that seems pretty unethical and absolutely wrong. And looking back on game film and reviewing the tape, there are some questionable calls. Am I overreacting? Thanks for listening to me vent!!!

Let me add that at one point in the 3rd quarter, the linesman told me to, and I quote, "shut the f**k up" which my A.D. also heard because he was on our sideline. I am a young coach (2nd year as a head coach) but jesus, between this guy ignoring any type of question I had about a call to the head official making up roughing the passer calls!!

Get film cuts of the bad calls and send them to your high school association; also have the A.D. back you in writing that the official cursed out you and send that to them as well. Horrible luck!!

I rated them this weekend, put in all the nonsense that occurred...but it just seems like such crap man....these are high school kids who are busting their asses...we have 25 kids on our team (8 of which never leave the field) and this occurs against a team that has 75 kids on the team. I mean, come on, just let the kids play football. And like I said...the sideline official thinks because I am asking for an explanation on a call that I don't know how to coach or don't understand the game...that is a crock....it just really gets me riled u p to know that this crap occurs....I was pissed on Friday night, but then I come in this morning and find out that the head official has ties to the school we played..that just sends me over the edge!!!

Happened to us last Friday coach, except the umpire and the line judge are from the town we played... lets just say they about got lynched after the game by our crowd. 13 penalties for 145 yards and 1 penalty for them. I dont blame it on them but we lost by 1 point and they called a block in the back on a 2 pt conversion that we scored on that I am still trying to figure out where that occured. I take it up as another life lesson...

Marboo 59....I agree...I don't blame them that we lost, because we sure as heck had some chances..but it doesn't help when your defense makes a stand and gets a stop and then a magic flag comes flying out of nowhere....to go along with your refs almost getting lynched....the 5 officials had to be escorted off the field and to their cars by 4 police officers...and this was an away game for my team....like you said, chalk it up to a life lesson.....

dcohio...100% right.....I don't know if they were making up calls or showing favortism...but finding out this info doesn't help steer my thoughts into a different direction...guy should have said no when asked to officiate the game!!
