Piggybacking off the pre-game speech thread....what do you guys do from the time school ends on Friday afternoon until kickoff? We go to our pre-game meal, have O-D-K meetings, then take the field to warm up. I am looking to revamp the on the field portion and am looking for insight. Currently, the skill guys take the field and stretch in cow lines. Following that, we warm the kickers up punting and kicking off. Returners are catching kicks and returning them to the kickers. Then we kick PATs and FGs. Then we go to offense where every kid on the field runs routes. (This has to be fixed. There are kids that have very little chance of playing out there because we do not know what else to do with them.) We finish with defense. At some point during all of this, the linemen come out and do their thing. I'm sure there is a better way. When we are warming up the Qbs and WRs, there may be 20 or so kids out there. It can look like a circus. Same thing when they go to DB. What do you guys do with those kids you want to reward and let dress on Friday night or those seniors that really are not going to play and just soak up oxygen? Thanks in advance.

After school we eat pregame meal. Then we give them about 20 minutes to get down to the fieldhouse and use the bathroom. Then we do a little stretch/meditation routine. Depending on whether its home or away, we either load the bus or the kids start to dress. (we have everything laid out in their lockers). They have a little "quiet" time on there own. First the kickers, QB/WR THAT PLAY/and RB go out and throw some routes, nice and easy. Then the linemen and skill kids that dont play much go out and we dynamic warmup. Then we go Offensive groups for 5, defensive groups for 5, Team O and Team D. We come back in and do special teams check off and go ready to play.

I love the idea of a meeting RIGHT after school. Kids know as soon as their last period gets out, its football time. MUCH better than "be back here around 5:30," keep it all structured.

We will meet with our kids right after school in a classroom. We do a pre-game meal 4 hours before kickoff. We turn on a movie in our team room after the meal. Kids can run home or relax and watch the movie. But they have about an hour of free time if they need to run home. They sit together during the first half of the JV game. They get dressed halfway through the 3rd quarter of the JV game. We go on-field for a 20 minute warmup (yes, that's it). We head back to the locker room, say our final words, and then hit the field for kickoff. BTW, at one time, I'd have my team on the field for a 40-45 minute warmup. Their adrenaline is so high, they'd be worn out by kickoff. I've seen our performance go way up as I reduced the warmup time to 20 minutes. We WILL have our kickers and throwers out early to do their thing, but not anyone else.

I'm loving the idea of a 20 minute or so warm-up. Part of it is that I hate the whole hour-long warm-up session that just drags on, intensity drains, etc. I'd rather keep them inside, off their feet, quiet, getting focused. What do these 20 minutes look like?

We warm up for pre-game like we do everyday in practice (or do we warm up in practice like we do in pre-game?). Anyway, we keep it simple and brief. Especially early in the season when it's still very hot here in the south. There's only so much gas in the tank. No need to waste a bunch of it in pre-game. Also try to keep players low key. We eat pre-game meal right after school (@3:00), do a spec teams personnel check in the cafeteria before leaving. Free (quiet) time until 5:30 (headphones, napping, video games, cards, etc). 5:30 is O/D meetings. Pregame with kickers snappers and returners start at 6:15. Team at 6:25. We also have a dress out squad which keeps the "grab arsers" away from the players.

We take the field, get a group break, and then go right to our position coaches for a position-specific warmup for 12 minutes. We then come together and run plays for 7 minutes, O v D, no tackling, defense feints tackles and ball carrier always scores. We then punt one ball, and kick one PAT, and hit the locker room.

Thanks guys. Huthuthut, I like the idea of having a dressout group to keep the non-contributors out of the picture. We sent everyone out last year--BIG MISTAKE. There's no need to have fifteen kids returning kicks or running routes.

I'm liking some of these ideas.
Our field is a shared field about 8-10 minutes from the school. We don't bus over to it, so the kids are responsible for finding their own way.
2:00-4:00 Free Time After School 4:00 Team Meal at School 4:30 Commute to Field; Dress Down; Walk the Field 5:30 Pregame Meeting 5:40 Dynamic Warmup - No Shoulder Pads 5:50 Indy O 5:55 Specialties; OL pad up 6:05 Locker Room; Everyone pad up 6:15 Stretch Lines 6:25 Indy D 6:30 Team D 6:35 Team O 6:40 PAT - One kick only (if it's good, of course) 6:45 Pep Talk 7:00 Kickoff

12:45-1:30: Tutoring 1:30-2:10 Special Teams roll call and O/D walk thru. 2:10: End of school/Movie. Sometimes we have a theme. Sometimes not. 4:00: Meal. Sandwhiches and Powerade, nothing fancy. 4:30: Tape/Dress/Film. Offense will tape and dress while the defense gets film. Then we flip it. 5:30: ST roll call and load bus. 5:45: Leave for stadium. (We have two escorts so this speeds transit time) 6:00: "Stretch", we do a few high knees or some buttkickers. 6:05: Tackling Circuit 6:20: Position Work 6:30: Team vs. Air/Pursuit Drill. Offense scores on the last rep and we kick the PAT. 6:45: Locker Room. 6:50: Circle it up and listen to a little Bill Withers. 7:00: Kickoff.
