This is for you H.S. coaches:
Just wondering how others involved the incoming 9th graders into their FB programs. Not so much from a practice set up or how you staff but how do you indoctrinate them into YOUR program, from the gitgo, and how successful are you?
We do okay but could do better and have started brainstorming for spring.
So, What do YOU do in YOUR program?

We started doing a day in the spring where we bring them in for some testing (bench and 40 yd. dash), explain our summer routine, and show them some of the more advanced lifts. We then have some pizza and have a short meeting with the parents. It has helped get them off on the right foot.

just for clarification, are you talking about 9th graders in your building, in another building (if you HS is only 10-12) or 8th graders that will be freshmen coming in the next fall?

Sorry, can't really help on that one. The only thing that we can do is have a parent's meeting prior to the summer. In the summer, we have our normal rules, as they are now in high school, but prior to the date that the school year officially ends, we can't have any contact with the 8th graders other than that meeting. We do offer any one in the pop warner program free admission to the games if they are wearing their jersey. There is also a recognition at the end of the season during halftime, but that is about it. I WISH our HC would take more time to acknowledge that the pop warner program existed and tried to have some continuity amongst the programs (other than the mascot). A spring clinic for all the coaches, dropping by their games (not every game, but one would make a difference, IMO). It would also be nice if there was a summer camp that the HC staff put on for the pop warner kids focusing on fundamentals. I think that would definitely have some buy in.

what we are getting ready to start is having our two middle schools coaching staff 7th & 8th grade come up to the highschool during the spring when we start implementing our base OFF. / Def. that way we get this going for our feeder programs for next yr. but once our incoming 9th graders come we have a week of camp 3 weeks before fall practice to install the base and then once fall practice starts we have almost 2 weeks with them and then their of and running it.

We have an after school weight lifting session with them beginning in Feb. A MS coach does have to be present during the session and it must be seperate from any HS weight lifting or anything but it gives us a chance to meet them, get to know them, and teach them our lifts and what we expect out of them

Our Head coach goes to the two middle schools where we get most of our kids from and has a meeting with them(April or May) to pump them up about coming to our HS. We have two camps for them to attend over the summer, one put on by us and the other by a local college. They are invited into the weightroom and throwing sessions during the spring and it is expected they get to the weight room over the summer. Two of our coaches teach at one of the Middle schools so that definitely helps get kids fired up and make them feel comfortable moving to a new school and coming to the football activities.

We have a 2 week camp in spring for 8th & 9th graders - basically what will be our JV team in the fall. Other teams in our league do this as well and it culminates in a jamboree/controlled scrimmage. It seems to work well and it gets the kids used to the next level a bit and we get to see as a staff who is coming up.

starting in January:
7th grade (rising 8th) lift 2x a week, mostly teaching them the basics of lifting and get them used to our way of doing things, plus our expectations.
8th (rising freshman team) lift 3x a week. Early on it is about teaching the proper mechanics of each lift, but by the end of the first lifting cycle, they will have max for our core lifts, just like the varsity. We keep records of each class/athlete to see how they progress through the years, also to make adjustments to the weight program.
7th will have a 2 week session of spring practice, with shells and limited contact.
8th will have 2 weeks of spring practice, but the varsity coaches will be present to run this. These are seperate from our varsity spring practices.
At the end of the 2 weeks, we have our middle school teams and our Cteam to have 'Bowl Game' in our stadium. It really is just a controlled practice with line working on drills, and the skill players going 7-7. They get to be on the 'big' field, and the coaches get to give them a pep talk about one day playing under the big lights, etc..... The 7-7 will put the 8th grade teams verses each other, as well as against the freshmen.
Summer: We will field a freshman 7-on-7 passing group. We let them participate in all of our 7-7 passing leagues, and take them with us to the bigger tourneys we go to. They will compete as our '3s' when we can enter as many groups as we can.
Overall: Our middle schools (we have both a 7th grade team & 8th grade team) run our offensive system and our defensive system. Obviously our cteam does as well. We also have the local youth league run a trimmed down version of our offense and defense. We just have the rules set up to make it consistant for all teams (i.e. no blitzing, set number of offensive formations, set defensive front, etc....)
We conduct a clinic with our middle school coaches and another with our rec league coaches. We show them how to do warmups, drills, the basics of our offense and defense, terminology, etc...

Many moons ago when I was just a pup. We actually had practices over the summer going into 9th grade. No pads, but we did pretty much anything you would do with the JV or varsity squad during spring training. It was conducted by the Frosh coaching staff with the varsity coaches peaking in and introducing themselves to us from time to time. We did all of the weight training and agility drills but more importantly they ran over the off/def we were going to be running once the season/"real" practice started.
The cool thing about it was on Thursday we would go to the beach (grew up in Florida) and one of the other schools in the area would also be there with incoming frosh and we would scrimmage on the beach. It was more like sandlot football but it was competetive and its when your start to become a team. Then on the way home they would feed us. It was a really good experience.

Our head coaches go to the middle schools and gets every player a football t-shirt to wear and he goes over the expectations of what it takes to be a part of our program. One day during the season as 8th graders they come to a varsity practice and go through some of the drills with the varsity teams. At the end of their 8th grade year the head coaches go to the middle schools again adn discusses with them what they can do over the summer to get ready for the next season (summer lifting, camps, throwing sessions, Sunday night camps, etc.) The new freshmen then get their equiptment after the 1st varsity practice and begin the 2nd day of 2 a days. They have senior line leaders that take them through all the conditioning/tackling stations. They need to be able to sing the school song by the end of camp and they are active in all our fundrasing. At the end of the freshmen season the coaches take the 5-8 top players and they run scout team during the playoffs with the sophs and JV.
