What would you guys do if your basketball coach came to you and asked you to have your best football player who is busting his tail in the weight room and showing great gains in your weight training class stop lifting heavy in your class because it is hurting his jump shot?
Just a Question that is eating me up.

meet in the middle, so to speak. both of you may have to alter some things to help the young man continue to gain needed strength and to be a solid contibutor for the basketball team. ultimately, though, let it be the kid's choice.
might try changing the time of day he gets his heavy lifting in or the days on which you are lifting heavy. basketball coach should also try getting the kid to work on other aspects of his game as the player "recovers" from the lifting. being a good shooter is about shooting not about whether or not he's strong or weak. the player must actually shoot more, now, as his body goes through changes. shooting is about muscle memory so little in the way of technique is affected by strength. however, as a player becomes stronger he may have to subtley adapt to this increase by "taking something off" of certain types of shots. it appears, this is what the player must work on.

to me this all goes back to a need for a program wide system.. such as BFS.. that way you can adjust during in season for each sport.. I know I wouldnt want the baseball coach taking my players out and working them out at all during football season..
so.. the fact that I have them at all during another season.. I will do my best not to upset the situation..
my old school we lost all baseball players from december until their season was over.. sometimes a week into spring football depending on how deep they go in the playoffs..

Put it back on the kid, is he a BB player who plays football or a football player that plays BB.

no one turns into the hulk over night, as long as you continue to shoot everyday for a decent amount of time your jump shot should not be affected by the gain in strength

Had the track coach come up to me this past spring with a similar complaint about some of his sprinters wearing themselves out doing heavy lifting the day of the meet. To be honest they weren't even lifting with me (were going in during another period) and this guy has no discipline over his athletes. But I told them they needed to listen to their track coach, I thikn you have to respect the in season coach for two sport athletes. That being said when spring sports end football is next on the agenda, so from May thru however far you get in the playoffs football is either in season or the next sport in line, hence priority; advantage good guys.

My first instinct is similar to those who say that Jordan lifted and that if the kid works on his shooting every day there shouldn't be a problem. However, perception is reality, and the bb coach perceives this as a problem. Can you adjust the workouts to compromise?

Another way we have combated this is to get articles on this very topic and educate other coaches about the benefits of lifting in other sports. If Jordan lifted, find the article. If Tiger lifts, find the article. We have a great article about Karl "the Mail Man" Malone who lifted 1 hr. before tip off.
DCohio talks about suggesting or allowing football players playing other sports to slack off.....this is our mentality as well, but it needs to be conveyed through the AD and the other coaches. The other sport(s) coaches need to be pretty passionate about weight training to understand this. Football coaches know that it is a MUST!!!
Tough arguement that is overcome with communication and no backstabbing.

Comparing a high school kid to Jordan or Woods is not a good idea. Those guys are freak athletes.
The kid ultimately has a decision to make. I response to the BBall coach is - It's the kids decision, not mine.
