Being new to the profession, my goal is to become a head football coach some day. How long has it taken you? If you haven't gotten there yet, how long did it take your head coach now to get there? Also, please tell what state you are in.

my head coach told me that when he started coaching he wrote down on his goal sheet that he wanted to be a hc by his 36th birthday. he accomplished that with about a month to spare. i think he coached for 12 years before becoming hc at our school.
i started a little later than a lot of guys i know, when i was 26. i spent some time in the middle school and wrote down my goals last year when i entered high school. i'm turning 30 this summer and i want to be a head coach by my 40th birthday.
it all just depends on how you come up through the system. some people get promoted fast, others take their time.
i am in texas.

It took my head coach around 5 years or so. He spent his assistant years as an oc before taking the plunge. Which, has worked out quite well. Our staff has been together for the last 5 years. We know each other, our families, and our chemistry is excellent.
My goal is to become a head coach. I don't know how long it will be. I am a year away from getting my teaching certificate, although I graduated a couple of years ago. My question is why are some waiting so long? Do you not feel that you are ready? Waiting to get the right fit somewhere? What factors are you considering that leads you into the hc job?

I don't know about waiting. The opportunities are not always available for many reasons.

It took me ten years to finally get a chance. I don't know about other states, but in Texas, even sub-par head coaching jobs are highly sought after and hard to get.
As far as being ready, I liken it to getting married or having kids, if you are waiting to be ready, that day will never come.

As stated above, totally depends on when the situation arrives. I'm a couple weeks shy of turning 27 and have had one interview for a head job; I just completed my 5 season as an assistant. I know of at least 4 HCs in the state of IL who are my age, a year older, or a year younger. Two of them have Hall of Fame coaches for fathers, so obviously that helps, both in the understanding of the position and the politics that go along with being a HC.

5 years.
Last HC had put in a good 4 years as an assistant / coordinator...but we were in a conference / city that experienced a considerable amount of turnover among all the teams, so I don't think that is typical.

I knew early on that I wanted to be a head coach - even when i didn't know that I wasn't ready to be a head coach! After college I spent 2 years as an assistant at a large school (frosh then JV) and 2 more years at another (Vars. Assisant) before getting my first head job at a small rural HS. Had a good first year but got cut with teacher layoffs. Became a Var. asst. at another large HS for 1 year and then got the head job at a medium sized HS. I wanted to be a head coach before I was 30 and made it at 26. Along the way I've learned I was never as smart as I thought I was - now I'm probably not as dumb as I think I am! You never know how the journey is going to turn out - I'm 49 and I think I've still got a few more years in me!

Still looking.. 7 going on 8 years. I have to agree with Tog about situations. I feel more ready this year to take over somewhere but there was so much turnover last two years, that it would be very shocking if something comes open.

It took me 23 years as an assistant to finally get the HC job at my HS on the 5th attempt. Call me persistent if nothing else. I had to land a head coaching job at the semi-professional level before I finally got a HS HC job.

It took 13 years to get a head coaching job and I was 38 years old. The first part of my career I didnt even think I wanted to be a head coach. I just wanted to coach and learn the game. Finally, I began getting that hunger for it and got it about 3 years later.
