I can't even guess. It's a lot, though. I start our playbook in late spring, after we've made our visits and decided what we like and how to fit it into our system. I feel that the playbook is more for me and the coaches. Because of that, I start it almost from scratch every year. Writing the playbook chrystalizes my thinking. Because of that I take my time putting it together.

I would make a guess of around 100 hours each spring and summer. I am a lot like phantom. I almost start from scratch each year just to rethink the play, assignments, scheme, etc...
Our head coach and I will sit down each spring or early summer and go page by page in the playbook and talk scheme and technique and add and subtract. This takes close to 4 hours each year.

once we've got it done, we don't spend too much time on it. may add some things but after we get the entire playbook made, we convert it to either a publisher file (interactive playbook that functions through explorer -- feels like you're on the net, but not) or we make it into a power point. this takes a lot of time because we add video cutups to each play.

Since I'm a first year OC - I've spent a ton of time on our playbook. I really wanted that thing to be the master "cookbook" of everything we can do within our philosophy. Our goal is to be roughly 50% double wing, 30% I, and 20% Bunch. So my goal was to simplify terminology and make those things very coachable within our system. The off season always makes me feel like my goal is to learn as much as possible until about May - and then simplify all that learning down to usable concepts, plays, etc. I even give our other coaches "hit charts" for our pass and run plays so they can easily see what we have to attack each area of the field - we should not have to "draw stuff up" week to week - it's all there if we properly use it, coach it, and execute it.

I just put together our playbook/manual...its 137 pages , about 30 pages of text explaining philosophy, personnel, coaching tips, rules for success, installation suggestions ,theory etc....then each play drawn both to the left adn right against 8 different defenses, blockign rules and coaching tips jotted on the page as well. additionally, one page of blocking cheat sheet for each linemen(everything they need to know on one page), one page introducing each play and the theory behind it...for the first time ever, i had it copied and bound at office max, im selling it now for 50 dollars...cost me 15 to make it, 7 to mail it. anyhow, its a ton of work, 6 years of applied unrelenting intensive research and trial and error and i give it away lol....as i said to my wife "i put more into this than I did my entire education". IM very proud of the finished product. www.freewebs.com/coachcalande/

After 8 years of the same one, completely redid the defensive side. Drawings were huge. Tweaked it and added somethings this year. It helps me remember what I want.

I spent numerous hours [wife can attest] on my first playbook..It is kind of a template that I add to or modify each year. I agree with phantom for the most part playbooks are for the staff more that the kids..A playbook to them reads like I do trying to operate a cell phone acessory: I normally have to get them to help me..LOL
