Coaches:
One of the most significant tools we have implemented at Piedmont that has really helped our program has nothing to do with X's & O's, or what system we run on O/D or ST.
We call it the Captain's Council and here is a summary of how it works regarding the ebb and flow of our Team's morale, discipline and committment:
1. During the off-season, I meet with our 4 Captains about once every 4 - 6 weeks, to discuss grades, behavior, strength & speed program, etc.
2. The Captains are assigned their Group for the whole year and must help monitor their progress on all fronts.
3. During the Actual Footbal Season beginning in mid-August, we shift gears and I meet with the Captains Council Every Monday before practice.
4. The Captains serve as a great sounding board for my thoughts sometimes before presenting various things to the entire team.
5. The Captains also serve as a conduit between certain team members who might not feel as comfortable talking to me direct about some issues, and/or the Captains sometimes have a better feel for the pulse of the team regarding a topic I may or may not be aware of, etc.
6. Invariably throughout the season, the Captains Council has proven to be extremely effective for me to work more closely with our players, and it has also helped in the successful handling of problems before they could possibly infect and/or spread to all or most of the team.
I hope this helps you make your program even stronger...

I instituted the same thing at my last gig. We'd have the players elect the "captains"......we called it the PAC (peer accountability council)
Really good idea.......we let ours come up with a punishment chart for absences and lateness.
Kids take it a lot better when the punishment was made up by their own teammates.

Interesting idea, something I will bring up with our staff next meeting. Thanks.
