Would like your thoughts,
You are coming from another school (outsider) and have just become the new head football coach at a school with a ton of tradition but lateley (last 5 years) has not done so well. What do you say or what topics do you cover in your first team meeting.

Congrats on the new job. I would simply explain your philosophy, expectations, and plans. These are the things that got you the job, so these should be your starting points.

-Expectations -TEAM concept / we're all in this together -Importance of Grades / School work -Stay out of trouble / off-season has a lot of temptation -WHERE the weight room is - WHEN it opens - WHAT is expected - -Guidelines / philosophy for MULTI SPORT athletes -X's & O's philosophy - how you're going to use all the talent, yada yada... -Doing the wrong this is always 'easy' - doing the right thing sometimes isn't....what will it take to be State Champions?.....that is the one and only goal.

Brophy is dead on....One thing I'd like to add...is be yourself....don't try to Vince Lombardi or Jimmy Johnson....be Coachbdf.
I have been around long enough to see the speech that brophy outlines and then they never follow through.

Lou Holtz made a comment on this that I really thought was a great comment to the South Carolina team when he was named head coach. All of the players did not want Lou, they wanted one of the former assistants to be the new header. Lou told the team "you did not pick me and thats fine, but I picked you because together we can turn this around."
IMO, it was a good method to get their attention and listen to what you have to say.
