Thoughts on what some of you guys do for a pre-game meal? Specifically what do you feed them... What time...

There's a subway 15 secs from the school and a pizza hut not far away.
So we've made a deal with both locations to help feed us throughout the season.
Subway would be a basic sub (bread, turkey/ham, cheese, lettuce, etc...) and some chips
Pizza hut would be pasta and bread sticks.
Cheap, easy for us to get, and the kids love it.

Forgot to mention we're out of school at 225 each day.
For a home game we'll eat around 330.
We try and keep it the same for away games unless the trip is a long one, then we bump it up according to the bus schedule.

Subway sub, Grilled Chicken, Spaghetti, or Pasta, salad, fresh fruit, cookie, Gatorade or water.
Moms make the meal so once in awhile we get entree more Teen-friendly.
Eat at 3:30 PM for 7 PM kick off (need to eat at least three hours prior to competition). Earlier for some away games depending on departure time.

Honestly, I doesn't really matter what you eat 3-4 hours before a game. What is important is what you eat 96-24 hours before a game. During that time you want to drink plenty of fluids and load up on CHO.
Obviously, it should be something that is easily digested (you don't want it to cause gas). Remember, a lot of protein slows down the digestion process. Also, liquid CHO will be absorbed into the blood stream faster than solid CHO. And you want to stay away from unnecessary sucrose.
Perhaps most important, though, is that if you decide to provide pre-game meals for you athletes it has to be something that they will like and eat. There is nothing worse than playing on a stomach that hasn't been fed for 10 hours.

Honestly, I doesn't really matter what you eat 3-4 hours before a game. Maybe not physiologically but I think stressing good nutrition to our athletes is always important, whenever we get opportunity. And I don't want to feed them something that will cause a brown haze to rise up from field or sidelines during game.

a lot of guys talk about carbo loading the night before a game but i think this is completely not necessary...
if we were marathon coaches then yes, but football is a completely anaerobic sport, even if you are in hurry up you only move into anaeraboic glycolysis, never into an aerobic energy system
their regular diet should have enough carbs for adequatw glycogen stores with in their muscles
biggest thing is don't do mexican food before the game... this season our varsity had burritos the night before a game and half the team was having mudd butt all game day

We have a Chic-fil-a sandwich at 4:00. We've done that for years so I can't even eat the damn things anymore.

We do similar stuff. 3 1/2 hours before kickoff is ideal for the food to be doing them the most good and taking the least amount of their bodies energy to digest it. We try to follow a 70% carb, 15% protein, 15% fat model. That usually means for us sandwiches, moderate pasta (not too much) with ground turkey or chicken, marinated grilled chicken, etc. We have a parent group that comes in and feeds our kids, and our boosters give us $100 a week to pay for each meal. It works out great for us.

I thought we were the only coaches that do that...our local Chik-Fil-A is owned/operated by a friend of the program. Chik Sammich, fruit salad, and H2O is our pregame meal...

Our parents hand out snack sacks. Ham, Turkey, or PBJ sandwich, Gatorade, Fruit, and a granola bar. The kids love it and it has become sort of a pre-game tradition making sure they get their snack sacks. The night before a game the parents have a dinner with pasta bread and salad for the varsity team. Usually a pretty good meal but it runs RIGHT through me!

We eat team team meals on the day before games right after walk-through and before our last film session for the week as a team. Its the Pizza Hut pasta and sticks deal, they seem to hook us up pretty well as we've been doing it for a while now. Used to be mom's that made the spaghetti but this was an easier way I suppose.

We also do it at a local restaurant the evening before game night. Lasagna and chicken fried steak are the two meals that we have the most often.

For the guys who eat your team meal the night before the game- what do your kids eat before the game?

Phantom - thats an interesting question!! To be honest, I couldn't tell you because we release the team from school at 2:25 and see them again around 4:30 for meetings and ST walk-through. Our HC instructs them to eat 'something' but what that something is is really unknown. We do give a lot of educational resources to our athletes on nutrition, such as having a nutritionist come in to speak to the team so we HOPE that they're making sound nutritional decisions pre-game.

For the guys who eat your team meal the night before the game- what do your kids eat before the game? i played at a school like this. big team dinner on thursday (those were always great- good food, great bonding) and we got out friday and were left to our devices. worked just fine. each kid does their own thing, some develop their own rituals with others, etc. does put a good amount of trust in your players hands though

The cafeteria makes each kid a couple of turkey sandwiches and tosses in a bag of Sun Chips, an apple or orange, string cheese, and a bottle of Gatorade.
We generally eat 2.5-3 hours before kick-off, unless one of the moms decides to cook up spaghetti, then we eat earlier.
FYI, don't feed your kids Native fry-bread on game day... Bad sh-t. Literally,

We had team dinners the night before. One guy would host at his place (we'd rotate who was hosting) and it was pretty simple. Offense brought pasta, Defense brought sauce, two-way guys and specialists handled anything "odd" like a little ground beef for the sauce, or garlic bread, and captains brought drinks. We'd eat like pigs and watch a movie or play Madden. Always a good time, the host usually ended up with a year's worth of pasta and sauce.
On gameday, we played at 230 usually, and lunch was at 1045 (yeah, screwed up, I know), so there was no organizing that. The odd night game we usually ransacked the Pita Pit.

Most of our games are on Saturday afternoons (1:30 or 2:00PM kickoffs). We bring them in by 9:30 and begin eating somewhere around 9:45. We serve scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, bagels, fruit, cereal & bananas. They have gatorades/water available to drink. We also give them a Power-bar/banana & water/gatorade to take and consume around 12:00. Usually senior parents and other volunteers make up this "breakfast club" and will either cook or get food donated. Last year a local deli made everything and delivered to the school.
We will have an occaisional Friday night game away, so then it is usually a chicken cutlet and/or turkey/ham sub from a local deli delivered...again with powerbars/bananas and water/gatorades to take.
On game a year we have an early afternoon game on a Thursday (usually due to Jewish Holidays)... they are at 3:30 and we will simply give them Powerbars/gatorade/water when school lets out at 2:00.

For our sub varsity games (5 pm KO) we usually give then a pack of crackers or a bag of GORP/trail mix.
