This question stems from the thread about having your players compete in other sports.
I'm not coaching yet (still in school at the time) so my experience is only from my playing days many moons ago. But we actually had weight training classes. Frosh, JV and then Varsity back to back. With the varsity class being the last period of the day. This allowed us to be able to participate in other sports and still be able to lift. Also we were able to start getting ready for practice early or watch film on the days we didn't lift.
Just curious as to how other areas do it.

With me being at a Middle school, the place where I work does not have an athletics period at all. We had to have football after school which allowed little to no time to really prepare as a staff. Most of this was done via email, phone, and practice which really stinks because it would have been very productive to have that time to talk and plan as a staff.

some kids have weight training as a class but there is no class just for football players or anything. weve been trying but admin not letting it happen. After thanksgiving i will start the offseason weights program and hope for good attendance

We are a 4 period block HS (same four classes 1st semester, new 4 second semester) If you are in a sport and passing your classes you take 4th period athletics; for football this is our wt. room time. This is basically the same thing I've seen at most HS whether they are 4, 6, 7 periods. And just as a side note, if you ever get a chance to teach at a school that has a 4 period a day semester block schedule I recomend taking it. You only teach 3 different classes at a time so limitted prep work and only about 110 students at a time to work with (parents, grades, etc.) You preps are 90 minutes long, and you get a new crop of students at the semester. Its a very nice situation

When I was in high school, we had an Athletic Wt. Training period for 7th Period, and Athletics class for 8th period. You were assigned to whatever coach was in season, and if you didn't play that sport, then you were released to your coach for Weights. So we lifted during school.
Then I moved out here to California to coach, and the school district I'm at DOESN'T have a class during school for all the kids who are athletes to lift during school, and we are forced to do it either before school, or after school and the kids who are playing other sports are not lifting (unless they go to a gym after their team practice). We tried before school, but we couldn't get anyone to show up, so we figured it's better to lift with the 30% that show up after school, than the 10% who show up before school...
Wish we could lift from 6:00 - 7:30, and have an athletics period at the end of each day for film breakdown, study hall, etc...then if they didn't get all their lifts done in the morning, maybe another 30 minutes of lifting after school before they have to go to their other sport... But that is basically a dream as of now, and we are trying to turn a bad program around (just finished first year) and we know it's a long road ahead

we co-op with another team. so at our main HS we have a morning and afternoon session and at our co-op school we just have a afternoon session, since we don't have any coaches that teach at that school
