I saw this question posted on a another board and thought it was interesting...
Do any of you guys know of a team that had a running clock against them (whatever the "mercy" rule in your state is) but somehow managed to come back and win?
I was watching the Iowa state finals earlier today and apparently what they do is start a running clock when the winning team is up by 35. However, if the losing team closes the score to within 35 points, the normal clock operation is restored. I would imagine that a comeback could be possible under those rules.
However, in my state, once a 40-point differential has been reached, there will be a running clock for the remainder of the game (starting with the 3rd Quarter). I would imagine that a comeback would be pretty tough under those conditions.

rules here, 40 points in the 4th = running clock,
although if both HCs agree to start the running clock sooner, or with less points advantage they can start the running clock sooner

in NM it's a 50 point rule. up by 50 in the 3rd game over. 35 points in the 3rd the clock don't stop.

We don't have anything like that in Rhode Island at the Varsity level. They will run the clock in freshman and jv games though upon a coach's request.

not in a state championship but yes I have seen a team go into the 3rd quarter time with 35 pt lead and running clock only to get beat in overtime.
kickoff return for a td, an Int for a td, a fumble return for a td and 2 td passes then won it in over time on a rainy, windy, snow packed field.
