Coach, raise your expectations...not of just your kids, but your self...no one will rise to low expectations...three things to consider...
in 1994 when Markham took over Bloomington, they were coming off a horrible season...1-9 or 0-9 or something liek that...he had like 25 kids at the most( i have read 17) and they scored an incredible 64 points a game and went 14-0 setting the standard for prep scoring for a 14 game season.
cant recall the year, but in Jerry Valattons second year at Foothills, coming off an 0-10 season, they went 10-0 and set the national standard for scoring for a 10 game prep season...
then theres Clovis East...they made the playoffs in either the second or third year OF THEIR PROGRAMS EXISTENCE.....
You can get it done. what kind of coach are you? are you the great teacher? the great motivator? the role model and mentor? the dictator? I say be all those things and be excited and convince your kids that the playoffs are just months away, if not them, then who? when?

Coach I believe that we can win every game if things roll our way, and I always will. But I do believe that a 4-5 or 3-6 team will be the #2 seed out of our district.
What this school needs is an infusion of spirit and a reminder of its traditions. We've got seven olympic medals in the trophy case, and a pair of coaches in the NFL that's a great tradition to build on.

NO DABBLING! You can't bet 10 cent chips here, you gotta go all in. Right now I'm coaching a semi pro team with a total roster of 16 players two of which are injured. We have a 155 lb guard and 135 lb TE (all we had left, and someone had to play it...they are normally WR's), on that side they had a 255 DE and 275 DT both of whom played college ball. We play 15 min quarters (that last forever!). We run the DW. Last night we scrimmaged (game situation, more like NFL pre season) a team with 78 on the roster (50 of which dress for games) who has been to the finals and semis the last two seasons. We played iron man the entire night, they didn't have a single guy go both ways (by the way we had no QB after the first defensive serries due to injury...we put in a cornerback..yes a defensive player who has never been under center). We lost 21-6. It's hard to make a case for a offense based on a loss...but here are a couple stats we had one back over 110 yard rushing and another over 50, we threw for 45 yards on 3 attempts (not a lot but remember we don't even have a QB), we kept the ball out of their offenses hands and because of that ( and a hell of a defensive effort) they didn't score a offensive TD. (kick return, punt return, int return were their three scores) Here's the difference. When a spread team is out matched they might run something like incomplete pass (clock stops), draw (clock runs), incomplete pass (clock stops), punt. They may use 30 seconds of clock. When we are outmatched we run power (clock runs), wedge (clock runs), Power (clock runs)...get the picture...we may go 3 and out, but we will use more time per play, and more time in bettween. (around 1:15-1:40) This is a big...big...diference. Last night had we tried to spread and throw in our situation...we would have gotten manhandled, they would have looked like a all star secondary. Instead we took it on the chin, our players fought their hearts out (I couldn't be prouder), we did it with class and identity...and afterword their coaches said we were the toughest SOB's they've played. (not the best...but the toughest...to me that says something)

Spread Option (I think someone mentioned it earlier...) is definitely the way to go... once your kids get the hang of it, it can be a thing of beauty. Also, you could throw in some Jet stuff here and there... but I think that if you have been on a 22 game losing streak... the Spread Option is your best bet- feel free to email me at nhlpch99@aol.com if you have any questions-
