I know this isn't football related, but I'm looking for some help. I have been asked and decided to take the position of head GIRLS track (oh the joys of working in a small school). Any one have a track background or know of a site like this that is track related please let me know.
Thanks.

Are you the only coach or will you have help?
If you are looking for what types of drill or whatever I can probably help you out.

There's a shared assistant for the boys and girls throwers, but other than that I'm flying solo. My biggest concern if getting the running workouts. The rest of it I've got a pretty good grasp on.

How are you and the other head coach going to split up coaching duties? One jump coach, one throwing coach, running events?
When it comes to workouts, make sure you have a wide range of training methods. We have speed days, power days, game days, agility/quickness days, etc... and we lift 2-3 days per week depending upon the number of meets we have and what days they fall on.

JD,
They make you coach track out there also? You are a jack of all trades.

We made do with 3 coaches 1 for guys 1 for girls and 1 "floater" that dealt with the jumps.
Same as when I was in HS. I also ran hurdles and for the specific training I went to the Girls coach but for the running we did that together mostly with certain days being split up as distance and sprinters.
The main thing to remember is to try to vary it otherwise the guys are just running circles every day. If you have a good hill nearby spend one day a week there running various drills. Stadiums step workouts everynow and then.
I know one thing we liked to do on a slow week (1 or no meets) is to have a Relay day. Split them up in groups either with (800+ 200+100+100) vs (400+400+400) or (1 milers first leg, 800 second leg, 400, 200, 100). I like the first setup b/c it makes that last 400 guy increase his pace slightly to stay just ahead as the 100 guys sprint to catch up.
One key is that the distance guys probably ran Cross county so they have the stamina so you work on a LOTS of 600 (run a lap and a half the last half lap and repeat) This helps develop the kick at the end. They run it as hard as they can.
the 400 is more speciallized and I can set you up with a training program for that one. I actually got it someone who is actually known to be one of the best developers of olympic 400 runners, right out of the state of Texas.
The 800 is for people who aren't quite sprinter but aren't quite 2 milers. There are two types of these guys the 400/800 guys and the 800/1600 guys. They need to be trained differently this is usually neglected.
100 & 200 guys need to work alot on Form and Starts as most of them are already fast or they wouldn't be here. Most of their races will come down to the start and carryover speed.

track is spring football in Minnesota. I do it as a way to make sure our guys are lifting and running in the spring if they are not on the varsity baseball, tennis or golf teams.

That's the way it was for us at first but then once the athletes started sticking to it the track team got better and it became a thing of pride as the other teams were stocked with the skill guys from our rival football teams. Backs and Receivers always want to prove they are faster than the other guys.
