Rule #1 is "Don't put your head down."
If you put your head down and I see it don't expect to play the next play. I'll pull you out of practice/game and have you doing push ups or whatever.
Literally when a kid puts his head down and someone on our team says it the kids immediately say "John you're paralyzed for the rest of your life. Keep your head up."
I hate seeing NFL or big time college players putting their head down (for more than injury reasons but that is the biggest reason).
IMO every coach should make this a point. Drill it into them.

God Bless Him and his family! Please coaches lets all coach our kids better and make sure we do everything we can to teach our kids how to tackle. I was fortunate to play at Rutgers and I feel so bad for this kid!

There are trickles of good news coming out of Rutgers, with uncomfirmed reports that he does have some limited movement of his feet, and sensation in his hands. If true, this would indicate that he has an incomplete spinal cord injury, as opposed to a complete one, offering some hope for recovery. I pray this is true, and that this young man is able to go the route of Dennis Byrd and Kevin Everett and walk once again.

it hit hard to home too because my cousin plays for Army. He's on Army's kickoff return team. on the field when that happened. Really makes you appreciate every play and opportunity you get and to not take it for granted.
Used that as a teaching point for some of my kids this week. Gotta keep that head up.

Prayed for him after practice yesterday. This even hit us down here in the south. The freshman QB for Rutgers played for us last year. When Chas went for his official visit, this young man was his guide. He is a leader for the team.

I agree totally. what happened is terrible. Which is why we all teach kids to "See what you hit" "bite the ball" "keep your head up". These kids see what the pros do and we end up with tragedies like this one.

Being a Pitt season ticket holder, and having seats literally one seat across from the visitors section, I had a good of good conversation last Saturday with folks from Rutgers. One of those things that remind you there is stuff bigger than the game. Both Pitt and Rutgers fans wore the same stickers about our thoughts and prayers being with Eric.
The family has been pretty quiet about his condition in terms of day to day stuff last I heard.
