This was my first year as a youth coach. I coached my son's 5th/6th grade team. We went 6-0. That really was a lot of fun. We had 19 kids and not a single bad player on the team. Never coached a team before in which every player on the team was a contributor and had so many great athletes.
I'm also coaching a 6th/7th grade team in another town. These kids have never had a winning season before. Last year, they only won 2 games and were absolutely destroyed (running clock) in the 5 games they lost. So far this year, we are sitting at 3-3 and our 3 losses have been 14-6, 14-6, and 20-0 (to the undefeated best team in the league that has been dropping 30+ on every team they have played).
Our numbers are low and we have a lot of kids who can't even get into a stance. Lots of first-year players who have no understanding of the game at all. Because these kids haven't had a whole lot of success, most of the really good athletes aren't playing. We only have nine 7th graders and ten 6th graders. The teams we are playing have similarly-sized squads in terms of total numbers but they have almost all 7th graders on their squads.
Offensively, we are Hugh Wyatt double wing (power, counter, trap, rocket toss, criss cross, and wedge, and belly). We have only thrown about 3 passes all year. Defensively, we run Dave Cisar's WT 6. We don't score a ton of points, but we have dominated the time of possession in most of our games and haven't turned the ball over much. We are pretty sound defensively and tackling has improved greatly from the summer.
Anyway, our last game is Tuesday and we have a chance to finish out the season 4-3. That would be HUGE for these kids and would go a long way in regards to getting some of their classmates to play for us next year. We have already had kids come up to us saying they will play next year. If we can finish with a winning record, I think that would definitely get our numbers up.
