I'm curious if anyone else out there is doing this, but soon our high school varsity coaches are going to begin to have some individual and small group practices with the current 8th grade kids. It is legal to do in our state, plus we are going to a new system with the triple option so it will prepare us as coaches for the fall. Any suggestions or thoughts?

What's their rationale, Brophy?

What's their rationale, Brophy? Make MS ball PAID 'big midget football' (for better quality instruction). This would be inner city kids. NONE of our athletes (the kids that play) would be able to afford this. Not surprisingly, the jokers that are pulling the strings on this (booster parents) have kids with ZERO athletic ability.

we did some spring practice stuff...was totally worth it...good balance of fun and fundies. got more kids out by word of mouth...when we first did it...13 showed up, two years later 44 showed up.

if we did that when I was in 8th grade I dont think anyone would show up because I'd 95% of us were either on the baseball/track/tennis teams...

you do it AFTER those seasons. theres always a couple of weeks til school is out after those things end. but youre right...if you do it too early you lose the track and baseball guys for sure. course some coaches brow beat the kids to death for having a life outside of football...shame really.

We did it last year with about 50% of our fall team in attendance. two weeks, 5 practices per week. It was a real leg up for our system.

we do it coach. 1 week, no pads, put them through drills. Teach them 3 plays. For us sweep, trap and waggle. Basically have fun let them meet the coaches and have a feel for the program also gives you a chance to get a feel for them.

we do it for week, basic drills 3 basic defenses, and ISV and uncovered. This year we are looking at adding a scrimmage at the end of the first week.

We are doing 7-on-7 this year with the middle school kids. We start practice (for 30 minutes after track practice) the day we come back from spring break. We are already scheduled to play in a tournament in April and May.

When I was in school (in Pensacola Florida). We had a summer program. Basically you learn the offense and defense from your future 9th grade coaches. No pads. We also started weight lifting and ran drills. Every thursday they took us to the beach where we wood play a sandlot type of game against other schools. Not sure of all the details but it was fun for us, plus we went into the season prepared.
