I called my first game today and we LOST. We had a total of 20 fumbles in the game alot of it was the QB's fault. It was pouring down rain but that shouldn't be an excuse because the other team had only 2 fumbles. We scored on a quick screen down the sideline. We scouted the defense 2 weeks ago and they were running a 46 Def. the whole game. Today they came out in a 3-5-3 which completely threw the offense off. O-line didn't know who to block because lb's were moving all over. I tried to make adjustments everytime the o-line came off but it was pouring so much that the markers weren't working on the whiteboard. How do you coaches handle a situation when the team you scouted a whole game runs a certain defense then comes out and runs something different?

20 fumbles? Wow. Was this on the exchange or after? I had given my QB and center about 1000-1200 practice snaps before our first scrimmage, and about 200 of those were with a wet ball. Maybe they just weren't ready to play in the rain.
Also, like brophy asked, is this HS or youth, and if it's youth, what age group?

I try to use the two weeks of camp to go over all the different defenses with my o line. That way if we get surprised by someone we have a chance. I also have a couple of plays that work well vs any defense so I always have something to fall back on. (Jet Sweep)

20 fumbles!
That is darn near half of your offensive plays, right?

Our age group is the freshmen level. We have 5 run plays and 5 pass plays all out of 5 formations. Brophy, we are a spread team with the Y flexed out about 4yds from the RT w/single back sometimes 2 backs. Our biggest problem today was they had 6 in the box against our 5. We ran jet sweep to both sides which worked but they started blitzing the A gap to the side we were motioning to and got blasted. The lb's on every play were coming up and moving around and would blitz. Who would your oline block when the backers are moving around. Our kids came off to the side and said "Coach their blitzing everyone", when actually they blitzed their W & M. I know if I brought in another Y we could work stacks but at this level just running those 5 run plays are hard. FS C L W M S R C T N T X LT LG C RG RT Y TB QB Z

We ran jet sweep to both sides which worked but they started blitzing the A gap to the side we were motioning to and got blasted. Coach: Two quick thoughts - one, no one coming through the playside A gap should be able to stop a jet sweep, period. Is your sweeper taking a slide step away from the LOS after he seats the ball? Second, you should have a "No Play" in your arsenal for when defenders start timing up your cadence. Call "No Play on One" (or whatever your normal snap count is), which is much better than calling a play on a long count, because with the No Play, little Jimmy doesn't even have the excuse of saying "but I thought we were running XX on YY" if he jumps -- there is no play, ergo nobody should move on the snap count. Not infallible, but it should really help. As far as what you have diagramed, Y and Z block their men, your RT hooks his man, the RG pulls around looking for the first bad past the RT, you dive your single back playside to slow down the Mike backer & safety, and your sweep should be off to the races -- I would also boot the QB opposite the sweep to put backside defenders in more of a conflict. Hope that helps.
