Coach,
Are you putting in a new offense?
If so:
1. Create position manuals and supplementary learning material for the players.
2. Create coaching aids (usually pages out of the playbook supplemented with other materials)
3. Think about what you want your installation schedule to be. What order to you want to teach the offensive fundamentals and plays? Bulid a calendar
Are you taking over an existing system? If so
1. Review all old game film. Statistically break down the productivity of the offense and the individual plays. What worked? What didn't? Why???
2. What plays are most effective against certain opponents schemes? What blocking schemes do you like against certain fronts? What route combinations are good against their base coverages?
3. Where do you need to add / subtract plays from the offense?

Congrats... I just finished up my 1st year as a DC. I'm not sure if they can be compared but I'll give it a try. The first thing I did (not know the kids or the staff) is develop a system that was simple to learn. I told myself to not assume anything. That goes with the kids as well as the coaches. So, I developed position manuals, playbooks, drill booklets, coaches aides... everything. Then I help meetings every Wednesday to go over another aspect of the defense.
Now as my 2nd year begins, I've gone back and am following the same steps. But this time, I know what I have to work with so I'v been mixing and matching personnel in different positions to see what my best options I would have. Also, I'm going back over the manuals and tweaking to make them more efficient... throwing out the bad and adding better materials.
The one thing I say is most crucial is that you and the HC have a good understanding of what is best for the team. That might mean you going with what the HC wants. Hope it helps

coach,
sounds like you are well on your way. I would evaluate your personel and start thinking of ways to get the ball to your playmakers and putting the kids in their best positions to help the team.

installation schedule is crucial. set up a framework for entire year. then, break it down to by the week. then, by day try to establish a duty roster for offensive coaches so that all aspects of preparation are covered. develop a weekly coaches schedule
