A post I made on the passing board got me thinking. Does anyone else have a problem with their receivers getting constantly held at the line of scrimmage and the refs never throwing a flag?
We play in heavily run dominated league: 1 single wing team, 3 wing T teams, 1 double wing team, and us (Air Raid). We tend to see some very creative defenses, but the philosophy tends to be consistent:
1. Early on we see lots of blitzing trying to get pressure. We normally go to our base set (Shotgun, 2 backs, 2 wide, TE) early in the game (we really only run this, 3X1 open trips, and 2X2 wide slot). We are a man protection team so both backs (and at times the TE) are assigned a man and check release if their man doesn't blitz or stay in if their man blitzes. Because of this all of our base passes have the ability to protect with 7 (or even 8) and still get 5 into the routes. We will also call a lot of quicks and screens vs. pressure. Because of this we haven't really had a problem with pressure via the blitz.
2. As the game progresses and they realize they are not being successful blitzing, they tend to go to some form of C2 (zone or man or combo) and basically mug all of our receivers at the line of scrimmage. I was just watching some of our game film and it was apalling to me what the officials allowed them to do to our guys. It is amazing to me that they can call holding 4-5 times a game on my center in the middle of a huge mess, but miss the DB basically hugging my WR out in front of God and everyone. I understand that these are different officials throwing flags on different areas of the field, but come on. I wonder if it is because we play in such a run dominated league, or is it because we were the new guy on the block (1st year program) and the just wouldn't give us the calls (conspiracy theory ). This is the time of the game that the pressure tends to get to us. Even though many times the D is only sending 3-4 rushers, my QB is holding the ball for 6-7 seconds because he has nowhere to go.
I just wanted to see if a few of you other spread guys have experienced something similar and what you did about it. My answer is to be better at running the ball vs. C2 due to the fact that we outnumber them in the box (something we were terrible at) and work harder with the receivers on releases.
Any other thoughts?
