I have a great desire to coach at the high school level. Although I was that kid that drank before school, skipped class, got in fights, dropped out. Not that I am going to let any of that keep me out but I am interested in knowing what is required educational wise. I have a GED and I am willing to go back to school to do what ever it takes. I love kids and hope to keep them off the path that I went down. Thanks to all that help.

You need to get a degree. With a GED that will probably require a year or two at a community college. Guys with a background can be good mentors so, if you're serious, get after it. Second semester classes will be starting soon.

rlucia, Go to school. I was that same kid. I dropped out at 16 never went to class. got my GED when I was 20 and now at 30 I am a sophomore in college and every semester I have made the deans list. I honestly think the teaching/coaching profession needs guys like us. I think we can relate with the troubled kids maybe a little better because we have been there and done that. I just finished my first year coaching and I took a special interest in a troubled kid that the ISS teacher wanted to join the team. He was a gang banger and was in a family of gang banger's. I was that kid when I was his age and I just sat and talked with him. I think the ISS teacher and myself have been the only adults that have tried to understand where he was coming from and just let him talk, give him some advice and be a mentor. He did not make it with football he said he just did not like football, but he said he will never forget me and I honestly think I have made a positive influence on this young mans life. Sorry kind of got off the subject. Any way go to school get a degree and make a difference. If you ever need to you can PM me or I am sure you can PM most of the coaches on here for some advice. Good luck

different states have different requirments. look into what is required by public schools in your state. look into what it required by private schools.

Remember, coaches have massive impact on kids' lives. Don't let the person you WERE ruin the man you want to become. Don't tell dirty jokes, swear, degrade women or talk about drinking around the kids. Go get the degree and earn your way into a coaching spot, perservere and in the mean time volunteer if you have to. You only get one shot to make the right impression, so don't screw it up.
Laugh if you want to, but a school district that I had coached for for six years, did not want to hire me (initially) because I let kids go early to lunch when I was a teacher's aid six years before. That cost me, I had to move and work at two other schools before I could get the experience as a "teacher" that I needed to prove that i was a good teacher and a positive influence on young men.
The consequence of your choices early on are minimal if all you have to do is spend some time at a community college, but now you have to punch the clock and go to work.
One chance per customer, remember that.

I will say this, that there is not really an easy degree to obtain. It requires work and dedication. Sounds like to me that you may have to work and go to school at the same time and that is not an easy balance especially if you have a family too.... Some classes are easier than others as are some professors. When you get into school as the other students around (upper classmen) who some of those professors are.
Get a degree in education because unless you want to be a lay coach. I think that it is harder to get a HC job if you do not have that Ed degree to go with it.
