Reading brophy's 7 on 7 thread, I read that coaches in Texas can't have any summer football contact with their players.
My question is...how the heck are you Texas guys so good in high school football? How is it that many of the top teams in the nation and a huge number of D-IA athletes come out of Texas with no summer football program?
Do you guys get spring ball? Do you have any other times during the offseason period in which you can conduct football-specific activities with kids?
What about the summer weightroom? Are you guys allowed to do weights and SAQ work in the summer with kids?
Whatever you guys are doing down there obviously works. I'm just wondering how you can do it without having the kids all summer.

we almost exclusively mirror the ncaa rules.
1) we do have spring football 2) we have a football-specific athletic period (we see our football players everyday during school) 3) we can conduct strength/conditioning camp in summer
would you trade a month in the summer to get EVERY single school day with all of your football players?
would you trade a 2 week summer football camp for 18 full-pad workout days in the spring? (not to mention, that you STILL get to see your kids during school day as well)
we do football from the beginning of 2-a-days until the last day of school - we will see our kids every single day during this time. (except for sunday; and saturday after football season is over). so, june & july are really the only months where we can't be coaching football (although we can conduct strength/condition camp).
what do we do during june/july that is football related? we "allow" our kids to participate in 7on7 tournaments and leagues....

That is a great set-up. I wish we had that here in my state. As far as your "athletic period" goes, what kinds of "football specific" stuff do you guys do? How long is the period? What if a kid plays more than 1 sport? What are the coaches doing in June and July? Obviously prepping for the season, I'm sure, but what does a typical June/July schedule look like for Texas coaches?

Most periods are about 45 minutes. Its the same length as the class schedule for the school day.
During the season, the athletes work on whatever sport they are playing. They will also work out after school. During the off-season, they lift/run whatever. Cannot have mandatory work outside of school for the off-season. But a lot of places have powerlifting, which counts as a sport and allows kids to lift extra.

What about if those teams compete outside of Texas? In that local tournament that Brophy was talking about, there are a few Texas teams, and they look to have their coaches there with them.

Only restrictions in the summer, no pads.. anything else goes.. And helmets are not included in that no pads, so we get to use them for 7 on 7.
