When Rex Ryan was first introduced as the new HC of the Jets I knew he was Buddy's son but didn't know that much about him other than that.
He then went on record and called out one of the LBs for the Dolphins. Not sure what that was all about what I thought, "that's pretty classless."
Anyway, I watched some of his press conferences and was never too impressed although I liked the brand of defense the Jets were playing but I sorta expected that - They even played Daddy's 46 with Doug Plank on the Jet staff.
Then Rex came out and said that the Jets should be the favorite to win the Super Bowl once they made it in as the last seed with no one to thank but everybody else.
That's when I started to realize the genius of this guy. Instead of the media jumping all over the Jets for backing into the playoffs and his young team having to have to continually answer questions about not being deserving or getting in only because other teams went on idle mode, they were now responding to what Coach Ryan had said.
"Do you think you should be favored to win the Super Bowl?" is a much nicer question to answer than "Do you feel that you actually belong in the post season?" as you get prepared for the post season.
And you know what? They came dang close to pulling it off and I have to say that Rex Ryan is a breathe of fresh air in an otherwise politically (zzzzzzzzzzzzz) correct world of the NFL.
I've converted into a Rex fan (not my style but it's authentic for him) - Howabout you?

Huge fan of his D and his approach to things. He's absolutely crazy like a fox, excessive in the fun kinda way, and a no BS personality. He's like DCohio, plus what I imagine is a hearty bit of weight and a bit more of a "F*** Yeah!" personality.

i like the guy a lot. seems like he'd be fun to play for. love to watch his defense, if they get a decent pass rusher and keep their NT healthy they will really be a force

Excellent teacher and motivator. Believes in his guys and gets them believing in him. You can already tell his players want to play for him.

media will butcher him either way! I like the fact that he is himself. If he says nothing he is "boring" If he talks a lot he is a "blowhard" Can't win in today's media. I hope he stays true to himself

i was having a similar conversation yesterday before and during the game with a buddy i coach with. He wanted the Jets to lose and hated on Ryan, saying he and the Jets were so cocky.
On the other hand i was rooting for Jets and Ryan all the way. I love his swagger and his total F_CK YOU attitude. His team carries an , us against the world and he took them further than anyone thought they would go this year. He is a great coach and he is fun to listen to and watch

I remember an interview he did shortly after he got hired with the Jets. He was talking about how he had interviewed with other organizations in years prior, but never got the job because he would often go in and say what he thought they wanted to hear. He thought that when he was himself in an interview and didn't get the job, he just figured the organization wasn't ready for someone like him. Then the Jets came calling. Going into the interview he knew he was going to be himself, and if they didn't like it, fine, if they did, great. I love that he is himself all the time.

I love the guy he certainly has that us VS the world swagger. How else do you go into Indy to face Manning and the boys and think you will win!
He has done an amazing job with a young team that defence is only going to get better, and Sanchez showed some signs of what it takes to be a winner yesterday. They could have a nice little team in a year or 2.

Agreed.
One thing I can say (and I hate to name drop... but it's appropriate this time)- in the spring of 97 when he was still at the U of Cincinnati, I contacted him to learn the 46. He went above and beyond what any DI/NFL coach had ever done... talked with me on the phone for over an hour, sent out materials... I was very impressed and thankful.
He might be cocky, arrogant, etc... that seems to be the competitive nature which works well for him. But when he was rapidly moving up the ranks, he had time for a "nobody" HS coach (since then I've contacted other coaches... rarely even get a reply back)... seems to me he is an example of one of the really good guys in our sport.

I could not agree more. It is great to hear stories like this about guys willing to help. I have also contacted schools hoping to get a little help/guidance and very few of them have ever wanted to help. That is pure class on his part. Sure his style might not be peoples cup of tea but atleast he is genuine.

Agree with most of the sentiment. I'd never say some of the things he says to the media, but they really aren't that bad and get blown out of proportion. I mean, Dwight Freeney said he'd be shocked if the Colts didn't win it all and other than a Sporting News interview, I don't think the media said anything about it.

I love the guy for a number of reasons. He is a he!! of a defensive coordinator and has got the Jets playing great D in a short period of time. He is honest with himself, his players, and the media. That is so refreshing to see in the modern NFL were guys like the Hoody won't talk to the press much of the time. I also like him because he is one of the few coaches at the major college level or NFL that will openly admit to getting plays from a high school. That is class.

ryan is like leach.....
as long as things are going his way...he'll be popular.....
leach spent all his time talking about pirates, and ham and eggs, and he was popular until something didn't go his way....
ryan will be good until he starts losing or he locks a player in a broom closet....
i wish him luck....i like his style.....

The biggest problem with Rex Ryan is that he is related to Buddy Ryan. I couldn't stand him. I think he was everything that is wrong in a coach.

I don't think ryan will ever stoop as low as Mike Leech and lock a player in a closet. Then again thats just me.

I love Rex! His attitude is a must for the type of defense he installs. It's nice to have a different type of mentality in the head coaching world.

and then the fat jokes will be hateful, not funny! Shoot! I've already heard fat cracks about him. They'll be brutal when things go south, and in the NFL, they almost always do sooner rather than later.

That's the same thing Lane Kiffin did. Get everyone talking about him instead of on the players. Nobody is focusing on the struggles of the players it's all about the coach.

IMO he is a tool. He comments that charles woodson did not deserve the nfl def player of the year because his team lost in the playoffs was interesting. he said his db deserves to nfl def player of the year. the kid is a great shut down corner but he is only a cover guy where woodson makes all sorts of play.

He is the next lou holtz. he just {censored} canned his defensive staff today because of the loss. What's your source. I just did some checking and couldn't find anything. NY Jets: The AP is reporting 5 assistants will not return. According to the report, assistant quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, assistant defensive backs coach Doug Plank, special teams assistant Kevin O’Dea, pass rush specialist Chuck Smith, and defensive quality control Brian Smith will not return. The report says Chuck Smith will be joining the Tennessee Vols’ staff as defensive line coach. We have not confirmed if Smith is going to Tennessee. Another article is now indicating that Rex Ryan was premature in announcing Smith to Tennessee. www.nfl.com/news/story?id=090...s&confirm=true

I personally thought Ryan was a breath of fresh air. He reminds me of a bunch of guys I coached with in West Texas. Hard working guys who have a great sense of humor, and are not afraid to have a personality. Plus, his belief and energy transfers to his players. You want your players to think they are supposed to win.

I hate that fat, mofo! Just kidding. He's not fat.
His defense really stumped my beloved Chargers and forced them into silly mistakes. They scored 20 points in every game this season except that one. Even when they struggled, I expected them to pull it off like they did countless times this season.
Except for beating the Chargers, I actually really like him. Smart approach...play great defense, run the ball, protect your QB. Awesome!
