For all of you defensive coaches (head, DC, position coaches,,,)
Whaf-t do you guys do in the off-season... As a defensive staff what do you do?
Do you as a staff get together and put a game plan together against your upcoming opponents?
I would ove to hear how you guys do this. Details too.

One thing that we do is see if there's a way to maximize the talents of a uniquely talented player (if we have one) without screwing up the whole system. We do also look at the offenses that we'll see: how will we play Wing T? How will we play spread? etc.

I am doing this right now -
I go over every defensive play and simply think about, record what happened to my defense.
In most cases a kid didnt do his job. The question is why not?
The thing that kills us and probably kills most of you, is "maverick football", ie a dt shoots the A gap when hes expected to play 3 tech. Or a linebacker steps with the tailback or qb when he should be stepping with the fullback.
Or maybe your corner doesnt jam the wr instead peeks in the backfield. Things like that.

Do you as a staff get together and put a game plan together against your upcoming opponents? I would ove to hear how you guys do this. Details too. we really don't do too much scheming during the off-season...my feeling is that teams change much more than say a college...obviously because you can not recruit..for instance, Broad Run(VA state AA champ for two years in a row) for the past two years was an I downhill PAP team....their rb is going to Pitt and their wr is going to the Cuse....soph qb stepped it up so I am expecting a more qb-centric team next year..no sense reviewing that tape.... another reason why we don't too much scheming is because we really don't know what we have..for instance.last year we had a 5'10" 220# kid squating (parallel) 385..benching 250..now I am salivating..he is a 1/3 tech....makes all the lifts..good grades..can't play a lick..so now we are doing the shuffle..De to DT..Lb to DE etc..I will do my game planning when I know what we have One thing that we/I try to focus on is education..I have a real tough time here and basically have to beg the the other assts to watch training tape and visit clinics..last year I was the only asst to attend a clinic.. ..hey I actually spoke at two..which was fun That said, we/I will do research in the off-season..I will be visiting a cpuple of HS teams and getting some ideas from them.... That being said, I have notes from each game and know where the mistakes lay... Our/My problem lies in the fact that as assistants we basically have no responsibilty in the off-season...really no accountability..

I will go back and look at all of the game films and find out: a) how physical did our defense play? b) how well did we tackle? c) how well did we get off of blocks? d) how were our pursuit angles? e) how disciplined were our players? f) is there a position defensively that needs to be coached better or differently? g) did our secondary always keep the ball in front of them? h) are we creating turnovers? i) how is our 1st down defense? j) how is our short yardage defense? k) was I predictable with calls/fronts/blitzes in certain situations? l) what were our best fronts/stunts/blitzes this year and why? m) are our kids playing the game with great emotion? n) are our kids playing as a team and overcoming adversity? o) how well did we pursue run plays from the backside? - were cutback lanes available for the offense? p) how many big plays did we give up, and why? q) what formations hurt us this year? - was it our alignment or the schematic advantage of the set? r) what types of plays hurt us? s) what were our best/worst fronts & coverages and why? t) in what games did we have a great gameplan? - in what game was our gameplan not very good? u) who are our returning starters for this next season, and are they in the best position to succeed? v) what holes are we going to have to fill because of graduation? - what kids need to step up and improve during offseason so they can fill those holes? w) who are we playing next year and who are the key players they lost to graduation? x) what offenses will we face next year? - is there an offense or certain kinds of plays that gave us trouble, and what adjustments can we make to stop these offenses or plays? y) do we need to scrap any part of our defensive package and why? - is there something that we need to add to our defensive package? z) do we need to go visit with another staff to learn something that will make us better? aa) do we have our best 11 on the field on defense? - do we have enough speed on defense? bb) how can we do a better job of coaching our kids? - this could be practice schedules, drills, motivation, etc... cc) how many points a game did we give up? dd) are we as a staff making the necessary adjustments during the game vs. something that is hurting us? ee) what can we do to better our communication/execution between coaches on the field and coaches in the pressbox? ff) overall, how good was our run defense? gg) overall, how good was our pass defense, and how good is our pass rush on the qb in those situations? hh) do we have an aggressive kid or so who needs to be on defense, but it not? - do we have a kid who is not aggressive and avoids contact who needs to be taken off of the defense? ii) what are going to continue to do or add in offseason to make our kids more aggressive and mentally tougher because we will take care of getting them stronger, quicker, and more explosive jj) what does my 2-deep depth chart look like at every defensive position going into next year? kk) when next year's season is over, did I make sure on the depth chart that there weren't seniors backing up seniors, thus leaving myself with a position where there is zero varsity experience returning? ll) are we conditioned well enough to play 4 quarters hard? mm) is there something we are not doing or charting in film study that we need to be doing? - is there something we are doing in film study or in weekend game prep. that is a waste of time and needs to be sh__-canned? nn) are we doing everything we can do as coaches to hold these kids accountable, and to make sure that they are practicing and playing as hard as they can? Gosh..that is a lot of things to look at..you know i sit here and think I used to do alot of those things when i coached at the college level..I think I did much of it to justify my salary and because basically it was what I was told to do..a few things I learned over the the years..especially after about my fifth year coaching hs..going into my 11th now...realistically..how much defense can you really run and be effective at the hs level...are hs defenses predictable..i would say so....what calls are good...well theones you can execute..get the kids lined up and play...I mean how often does a team truly outcoach another team X's and O's wise on a piece of paper..now if your x's and O's are better you win and visa versa..I don't even have to look at your film..the biggest mistakes ALL defenses make make are #1 over pursuit, #2 tackling, #3 not getting aligned properly #4 situational awareness...Ok say you do your breakdown and figure out you suck at third and long...really what are you going to do about it...well maybe teach your coverage differently..maybe teach a different technique..maybe find a new scheme..who knows...the point being..IMO is you sould finding this information anyway..it doesn't really matter what happened last year..again IMO..I am going to go out and find new teaching methods..listen to new ideas..find new techniques..for every position...probably not going for new scheme stuff because I'm pretty settled and been there done that but am certainly looking for some tweaks...

Jgordon1 - I'm a perfectionist, am overly competitive, & the son of a highly successful coach. I'm going to look for every little edge that I can when watching film to make the kids better & to better our chances of winning. Just the way I was raised & coached. I think about all kinds of things while watching film. Why would I not? Our defense is NOT predictable & has been GREAT for us in many regular season / playoff games over the years. We pre-snap shift & disguise coverage most of the time. Being that I was an offensive line coach for many years, why would I want to make things easy for the offense by lining up in the same technique play after play? It's been my experience that when those guys get comfortable blocking the same front play after play, this allows them to play full speed & without doubt. It's also been my experience that when you show different fronts & pre-snap shift, more times than not you create a little doubt, & you cause those linemen to make split second decisions. The result many times (not all) is that those linemen don't fire off full speed because they are confused, or they make mistakes. We coach defense by the creed of Sun Tzu - "All warfare is based on deception" - There are going to be some years when we don't have the talent or speed that our opponents have. So we are going to have a style of offense & defense that gives our kids a chance to always be in the game. I'm used to being on staffs that go deep in the playoffs. We try to not leave any stone unturned. That doesn't mean that we overload our kids, or make things complicated for them (because we don't). The old saying by Paterno is true. You can only put on as much as your dumbest player. On the same token, I am not going to put an expectation on our kids that they are dumb & can't learn a multiple defense. It all comes down to how we teach it & how many quality reps we can get. That would basically be saying that we coaches don't have the confidence in ourselves or the know-how to teach & motivate these kids. We run a multiple split system that has been VERY effective. The kids are taught gap responsibilities & 5-6 fronts along with all of the stunts/blitzes. On the "d" line, you are either attacking the inside or outside shade of the offensive lineman. You protect your gap first, find the football, & then flow to the ball when you are sure that your gap is not threatened. Nothing complicated there. Inside linebackers are either going to be A or B gap responsible. Their keys & reads don't change when we change fronts. The same type of theory applies to our outside backers & secondary. Almost all of the stunts/blitzes that we run can be run out of all fronts. There is a lot of continuity from front to front. Everything is coordinated, along with the coverage. We run some simple zone, some man-free, & some man in the secondary. Our kids are not overloaded, & understand their responsibilities well. We want it to seem complicated to our opponents. It all comes down to the teaching ability of our coaches & not wasting time in drills. Reps, reps, and more reps. Same thing as in the classroom. Luke

Good Stuff Luke,
What I am going to have our D-Staff do this year is this:
1. They will create a file on each team we play (Folder). THat folder with have the breakdown from this past season and the breakdown from our 2009 Game. I will have all of their offensive plays that we have the past year two years on a DVD broken down for each opponent.
2. On the season we will have a DVD with the following a. Third and long plays b. Third and medium c. Third and short d. All TDs we gave up last season e. All Explosive plays we gave up (I will classify that next year for plays 15 yards or more).
We run Navy's defense so after we meet with their staff this winter / spring I will have the d-coaches meet (They figure this our themselves) and they will come up with a pre-liminary game plan on each team we face. They will present that material to me on June 9th (60 days before we report to football camp). On July 9th (3o days) we will review our August Installation and spring and summer 7 on 7 and camp personnel.
July 30th (Before we break _ I give them about 9 days off before August practice) we will go through this one more time.
Again as a D-Staff they will present to me each team, the game plan. What we did well last year, what we did not do well last year and our plan this year. The preliminary plan will be in place by the end of July (Spread plan, option plan, Wing T plan....)
We will review this first when we meet each game week. See if their tendencies have changed or are they the same. Use this as a basis.
We are going into our 3rd year together as a staff. We are starting to get this down a little. By next year I hope to be even better.

We put together a video-cut up of all of our opponent's "+5's". It's pretty easy to make, click on about five buttons and there you go. It is amazing what you can find out about your teaching, your players, your schemes and your opponents by looking at the best of what your opponent's do. And this all gets better when you have a chance to sit there with a returning starter and give him the chance to explain why he did what he did, why he went where he went or chose the technique that he used. Our D-Coordinator - who is pretty smart anyway - fixed a couple of teaching/scheme issues last winter by simply listening to kids. Jack Rarick Holt Football www.coachsvideoassistant.com

The plus 5 thing, that would seem to be a useful idea for our annual 46 Gambler clinic.
Seems to me that theres more to learn when things go wrong then when they go in favor. Thoughts?

BigM..Just to be the devil's advocate..why all the attention on 3rd down???isn't first down important..what about 2nd down....4th down??...if you think about it..you will see many more first downs than 3rd downs..Maybe I am different..I want to own first down....makes life easier later ps..it sounds like you have a great defensive staff..do you guys coach both sides of the ball? I'd be interested to also know how many teams kept the same tendancies from one year to the next

I agree all of the downs are good but just going over the season so far I thought our 3rd effeciency so far was not good. I want to see the cold hard numnbers - why too...
We coach one way (But we still platoon practice)...
We were pretty good against the run this year (I believe we only gave up a 100 yds rushing to 2 RB all year).
