I'll be interviewing of a new school that is opening up next year and was wondering how people have built a program from scratch.
What are the first things you think need addressed? My thoughts are to begin recruiting the feeders schools hard and fast then work on a staff.

Try to get in touch with the coach at South Pointe high school in Rock Hill SC, he built a program from scratch at that school and 3 or 4 years later won a state title and was ranked in the top 5 in the country for most of the season.
Here is his email from their site.

I want to say they won a 5A (largest in Idaho) State Title his fourth or fifth year in and have won several more since/gotten a few Top 25 rankings. If you can get in touch with him he might have some good information as well.

In the process of doing starting a new HS. Just completed the first season playing a JV schedule with Soph and Fresh only in the school. Had 2 Fresh teams and a JV team. We will start varsity play next year with Juniors.
Got our off-season rolling yesterday.
Just in my first 12 weeks of starting off a new program I can tell you it is a lot tougher than rebuilding one and then keeping one at a high level. You get so many athletes from so many different areas and backgrounds. Some have football knowledge, very few don't. Several are very talented but need to be taught football skills and the basics of the game. That was what Year 1 is all about.
When it comes down to it, opening a new HS is a 3 to 4 year commitment to the program. It takes that long to get that first group of seniors through your program and to develop leaders.

Only have a few minutes I may ramble here.
Starting a program is hard work. Sadly, teaching seniors how to put pads in their pants will happen for a few years. Start with a plan and stick with it. Where do you want the program to be in five years. Hold yourself, admin, and yourself accountable for that plan.
Coach up the youth coaches and parents on commitment to doing the right thing off the field and fundys on it. You will need those parents to start your booster club and help get the essentials. Get guys on staff that are teachers and in the school. You teach them football they teach the kids in halls and on the field. Set expectations for those coaches and help them get better.
Have a plan for off season development and competition. The kids will buy in if they feel good about it.
