How do you represent State rankings and weekly newspaper game picks to your team?
My preference would be do completely down play them and tell the kids that the stooges making those predictions and rankings really don't know what they are talking about and the only real result we focus on is upcoming performance.
I know other coaches that use those things as a source of pride and recognition for their program.
Some coaches use it as leverage to challenge their players.
Anyway how do you reflect polls and rankings to your kids and other?
Everywhere I go I have people say "great job you guys are ranked #__". I always tell them the polls don't mean a thing and we are not playing as close to as good as we could be.

I think it depends on the status of your program really When Iwas in high school, we were very successful and didnt lose to many games. Our coaches played down all that stuff and called it b.s.
My first year of coaching @ a pretty successful school. It depended on the oppoenent. If we were picked to win by alot, we usually downplayed it and claled it bs. Against a good team, we used it as a source of motivation
Were I am coaching now, we are in a building process (2-8, 3-7 first two years), we try to use any sort of bit of motivation we can. We try to explain the people usualy don't know {censored} but at least plant that seed of fire in their heads

IMO its irrelavant to your play on the field. Take care of the fundamentals and little things that you have control over. The rankings and all rest of the rah rah will care of themselves.

Ranking and picks are for the fans so forget about them. About the only time they are of any use is if you are picked to lose to yoru rival - then you roll out the "we don't get any respect" line. When you find yourself worrying about rankings and weekly picks, you've probably forgotten to work on something a bit more important. Coach your kids, let the writers (most of whom never strapped it on) make their picks.

I wouldn't even fill them out if I was a head coach. How do I know how well some team is all the way across the state that I've never seen. I'm not a big fan of them. It will all be settled by thanksgiving. If you aren't playing in november does it matter what you were ranked in september?

We just tell them hey it's a great honor to be ranked in the state and that shows that this program is on the rise and people are starting to notice you. You have to congratulate them, I would say it's every coaches goal to make their program the best it can be so when you crack the state rankings why not use it as a measure of pride.
We use it as a motivational tool as well because everyone wants to knock off a state ranked team, so you better be ready when you step on that field.
