Today, we had 14 kids show up for the first day of practice. Our QB is out of town for at least another week. My coaches asked me today if we were going to do double days for the next two weeks. My immediate answer was "yes" as that is what we have scheduled, however, I said we could look at it at the end of the week to see where we are at.
Their comment was, if we are going to select a week to do two-a-days we should do it next week so that we don't lose kids and hopefully we will get more kids out as we go. I hadn't thought of it like that nor was I planning on having less than 20 kids.
The morning session is defense and special teams from 8 to 10pm. The afternoon session is Offense and Special teams from 6 to 8pm.
I am open to a three hour practice Defense/Offense/Special Teams in the morning from 8 to 11am; however, it may be cumbersome on the kids. Should I continue on with the original plan or back off for this week and turn it up a notch next week?

Do you have enough for a full O-Line ? Or at least enough for half line ? . How many starters are there right now ? If less than half. I would maybe consider going the "NCAA" way of things meaning 2-1-2 (2 shorter practices one day, 1 3 hour practice the next then repeat etc) . I would work ALOT of fundamental stuff and worry about scheme once you have a good amount of your starters in attendance. Thats a rough situation

We had three very good oline/dline kids. Four Very good WR's. Tomorrow we will have a good feature back and one more more olineman. I know where an olineman is who is not coming out. I am going to try to get ahold of him tomorrow. So, we actually have a good core of kids, and we are in helmets and shorts right now. I am thinking this is the time to work them in fundamentals as you point out and conditioning, because they are going to need it.

Kylem, I think I am going to do the regular schedule tomorrow and then take a look at doing one practice on Wednesday. Good comments thanks.

the other thing too. since you have a low number of kids which means they are gonna get a ton of reps. you might want to consider taking out a couple periods and putting in some time for Chalk / Film Session. If you can film practice periods then show them what they were doing wrong and see themselves on film it is a huge help. Probaly one of the most underused teaching methods in high school football (at least around this area from what Im told)

I think this is where the other coaches were coming from, since there are so few kids, you can get through a drill period in half the time, since they are getting more reps in less time. I like 2 hour double day sessions with chalk and special teams (and maybe film) built in, because it seems the attention level of the kids is exceptional; moreover, going in the cooler times of the day makes for a more vigorous practice.

you set the practice schedule, the kids cope with it, tell the kids to get busy and get their friends out for football.
honestly,...drives me nuts to hear about how "tough" 2 a days are to hs kid when we do two a days with youth kids in the ymca camp.

I would go one long practice. I have been there. Trust me you will get more out of one practice with the group you have.

I think that is what we are realizing. The roughest part is not being able to practice Team situations, however, with half line and using linemen as dummies for Skelly I think we will be alright. Moreover, fewer kids creates lots more reps. It is amazing how many more reps we can get.

I have about the same amount of kids. We are doing 2-a-days. I was always taught to do it the right way no matter your numbers. Last year on the first day we had 2 players and stuck with it and we only played half the season. This year on the first day I had 14.We added 2 yesterday. Our schedule is 8am-10am/(lunch)10am-11am/11am-1pm. Hang in there and just prepare everyone to play.

I have a question that is related to this but not 100% about this?
1st I agree with Kyle about the format. Who says that 2-a-days is the right way of doing things? I see nothing wrong with them, but who says there right?

Jenks Olka does one long practice- comes out to same amount of time as two a days.
here, we are limited to a single 3 hour practice or we can go with two 2.5 hour practices, so the choice for us, two a days.

I have a question that is related to this but not 100% about this? 1st I agree with Kyle about the format. Who says that 2-a-days is the right way of doing things? I see nothing wrong with them, but who says there right? Well, our state has us by the short hairs. If you have a practice under two hours in length you must have at least two continuous hours of rest. Any practice over two hours in length needs 3 hours of rest. Each practice session shall be no more than 3 hours in length. So in a sense it is either 1; 3 hour practice or two practices a day. I am taking someone's advice and going Monday, Tuesday are double days two hours each session; Wednesday is a one a day for 3 hours; Thursday double and Friday one three hour practice. Next week I am going to go Mon-thurs Double days and then a scrimmage on Friday with a make-up session on Saturday. Monday we will be getting four or five more players. So, kind of hard to teach, reteach and reteach again. So, right now we are really focussed on the basics and hopefully by Mon we will be full steam. Also, we were in helmets the first two days and shells today and tomorrow. So some things we have to be careful about. Great comments, all are much appreciated.
