How many of you pre-season test.. You know ht, wt, 40, cone drill, VJ..what have you... I often wondered...Do these tests really matter.... It seems to me that over the course of the years....I have been more disappointed than anything with the results of these tests..I get my hopes up and then...well you know...the horse just won't run w/ pads and a helmet.

I like to test because sometimes a kid who does not look the part can really run and jump and lift etc. similarly, we find those that look strong simply arent.

We test periodically as part of our offseason program. We're primarily interested in measuring progress. The last time that we test is May. We don't see any reason to test again right before the season.

I agree - the physical tests are of little value. However, we do have one session of testing during the second day of our 2 a days. We will run all of players (usually 25-30) through a 5 station circuit with 1 or 2 coaches at each station:
Punt 40 yard Dash Long Snap Dot Drill Sled Tackle
The Punt and Long Snap stations allow us to see if anyone has some natural talent. We usually find 1 or 2 back ups that we did not know about although one year we "discovered" a kid who became a 1st team all county punter.
The 40 yard dash is more for the Lineman who "thinks" he is really a running back. It helps for him to see his time as the 24th fastest kid on the team. It also helps us see if there are any new speedsters on the team. Same with Dots.
The sled allows us to do something physical and functional early on - reinforcing good technique with the vets and getting our new kids off on the right foot.
We spend 7 minutes at each station so with time to rotate, it takes 40 minutes to complete the circuit. We just do this once. It also works toward our goal of encouraging our players to do their best (competing) every day.

Another great reason for extensive testing, publish results, helps keep parents off your back when they can see where lil johnny fits in.

I like testing prior to the season. Not only does it allow us to track progress in the athletes training, we also try to make a big deal out of the two day testing period fostering competition and excellence. I see little down side to testing prior to the season and we use it as a kick off to the beginning of two a days.

We test to measure progress but to also call out those kids that lift but don't lift too hard. They do not measure up in the end. Today I read the results to my kids for totals in 3 lifts (bench, squat and clean) and the average increase was 160 lbs. There were kids that only went up 50 lbs. and they moped around for the day because they squandered some time. Yes I am on the kids in the wt. room to work hard and they do but there are some kids who don't push themselves hard enough but act like they do. Today the results were read for all kids and posted. You learn who will be there through it all.

We Test in February, April, June (This week) and last week of July.. four times:
This testing cycle is the most important to me... By now you kind are who you are. We do test the last week in July (We go to a team camp in mid July for team camp and they do 40's there... I use their times). We give out t-shirts for clean and squat clubs.. 250 or 300 clean.. Plus totals (We have three clubs). So for them in July it is the last chance to get some t-shirts until February.
We give them off 10 days after we test and start practice August 10th.
Are current testing for this week is AWESOME!! 98% attendance at both levels and their numbers are exploding!!!
