Ive just been asked to be on an interview commitee for an open basketball position at my school. I was asked to be on the commitee because i am the strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant football coach. Depending on this hire it could really help out our football program. Previous coach was an AAU fend who told players to NOT play football.
What are some smart sounding questions I could ask to see if the gentleman is into strength and conditioning, likes football, and so on without simply coming out and saying it.

What is your philosophy on multi-sport athletes ?
How do you feel your players should physically prepare their body for the season?

What is your offseason program like?/What do you require of your student-athletes during the summer? How do you get your student-athletes in condition for your season? How do you relate to other athletic coaches?
These are general...sometimes to get the answers you want, you have to ask the straight forward question...If he is interviewing for a head job, he should be ready to answer the tough questions...

Good questions so far. A few more...
How do see your role in the athletic department?
Would you support an athletic strength program?
Can you/Would you coach another sport to help the department?
Are you a team player?
For the travel team coach, sometimes the best thing to do is lay it right out there. Maybe your school is not a good "Fit" for him.

Don't mean to throw water on the conversation here. I have seen too many "search Committee's" just be just that... a search committee... and have basically no say in the hire. Unless your input is REALLY going to be taken into consideration, I might try to find "my guy" and sell them to the committee behind closed doors. Believe me, minds are being made up right now. If you don't have an agenda, you are part of the agenda and wasting your time. Sorry, seen it happen to many times. The bottom line is... IMO, see what subjects/positions are open and find the best guy you can get to fit the teaching profile. Principals care about teachers first and coaches second

I would also add that most people interviewing can tell what answer is wanted by the way the question is worded. To really find out about someone, call people at the places he/she has previously worked to get a real feel for them, and for their fit within your program. Also, within the committee you are on, there should be some consensus about the type of person you are looking for.
