Here in this little town.. there is a big event.. some community softball league crap..
Kids.. adults.. coeds.. all participate.. its some sort of big deal..
Well I told our kids that I frowned upon them playing in this stuff.. I wasnt going to put my foot down.. because I came in late and they had already invested in this season.. whatever..
Well we have our spring scrimmage today.. and last night my starting RT breaks his ankle in a game.. In a freakin softball game!!
Today is our school's field day.. and they will be having a softball tournament at school..
I told our players thay they were NOT allowed to play..
and wouldnt you know... some little teacher comes to me early this morning and asks.. "would there be any way for them to play 1 game so that we can have even teams?"
I just turned and walked away.. this kept me from loss of mind and respect.

We have lost players for entire seasons because of Gus Macker basketball tournaments. You can't really win this one but I feel your pain!

I feel your pain. This is one of the joys of coaching in a community. I also think you need to bite the bullet on this one and let them play but also council them that they need to take care of themselves by not diving for fly balls (ESPN style) or sliding, or anything else that would ... and this is what we stress to our kids ... "Cause you to miss out of the FUN of playing football!" We stress that there are many things that you will want to do but what if that one thing kept you from playing football? We let them choose, but if they choose to participate, we ask them to please be smart and remember that they have something coming up that is a little more important than who won "field day softball game." Good Luck!

Air- this is just me playing the role of the "be careful" guy. I think you need to be careful where you place values of participation in football vs participation in the community. There are always community thing and you want your football players and football program well represented in the community, ENCOURAGE the kids to participate and wear your program gear- this goes beyond this season and goes into your overall program. Just another view point.

I feel your pain - just lost our center/Sam/Kicker for 3 months when he sprained his MCL sliding into 3rd in the last baseball game of the season.

I almost forgot, last year, we lost our starting OT for 4 months at the end of July when he hurt his hip in a local festival's "Toilet Race".
Here's the jist: 2-3 people push and one sits on a toilet mounted on some type of platform with wheels. He was pushing when he tripped on some debris in the street, fell down and proceeded to roll and flip like a NASCAR crash.
We thought the same thing, "it's for the community...the kids want to do it...its just for fun...blah, blah, blah"
Guess who won't be participating in the Toilet Races.....ever

Oh make no mistake about it.. there is not placing of value on football above community..
Its going to be this simple.. if you want to play football.. then during football you do no outside activities that will injure yourself..
This goes for AAU Basketball.. softball.. cow tipping.. whatever else they like to do around here..

True story, I was coaching a middle school football team and attending the varsity camp. during camp I see my projected starting qb, the varsity head coaches son, standing on trashcans and leaping into some crash mats. I said to the kid " take it easy, we NEED YOU healthy" and Dad, the head varsity coach heard me and said "ygotta let em be kids coach" and while I dont have any issue with him raising his son any way he wants, I did have issue with being undermined by another coach - his son played our football season with a cast on his arm and had about 6 fumbled snaps. Great kid, great coach, but man that situation still irks me.
You cant control the kids in every decision. We lost a kid who tried to throw a brick onto a roof, the brick went up, came right back down and shattered the kids face. Same season we had a kid try to jump off his roof into his pool. Came up about 4 feet short of the water and was casted.
Kids sometimes do stupid things.

A kid at our rival school shot off his big two on one foot last year while hunting! He was a good olineman and had offers until that. It almost ended his career, but he threw discus for their track team this spring and made it to the state finals.

Last year we also had our Will total his Jeep when he lost control and flipped it...like a NASCAR crash. Came away with a bruise on his a$$. He walked away from that and the kid pushing a toilet down the street couldn't walk for 3 months. Go figure. Where do you draw the line? Kids can get hurt doing anything.

I agree with Coach Knight - stuff happens in life and we can't control it or try to or it will drive us nuts. In the end you have to let these kids live their lives, be there to help guide them into the right decisions. I can see being upset about losing your RT in a softball game, but I'd much rather have my RT in a softball game than out selling drugs or doing who knows what else.
I have lost players to off field stuff and of course I was upset over it, but in the end it comes down to making adjustments when you need to. I had a LB brake his ankle one season riding a dirt bike and then the next season was in a car crash that left his father dead and him with some serious injuries. He played his last season and we went 10-0.
My point to all of this is these kids that we are privileged enough to be able to help guide into manhood need a bit of leash. If they are kept under thumb and not allowed to participate in activities that are seen as important in the community then we are doing them a disservice. That's my $0.02 anyway.

As long as we're telling our stories, last year our starting QB shot himself in the foot with a spear-gun! Right through the foot! happened early in the summer and he didn't miss a snap but it was telling, as he continued to do "the same thing" on the field at crucial times this season ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . Still ended up signing with Holy Cross for next year. You can't watch them 24 - 7 and putting restrictions on their personal time seldom work. Sometimes you just gotta laugh - to keep from crying ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png)

Ours get hurt doing stupid sh!t.
I had a potential D1 QB blow his knee out completely playing backyard football after his Jr. year. Had an O lineman screw up his elbow for keeps in backyard boxing. Same night a LB got his septim deviated and had to have surgery. A 3 tech's go-cart blew up and he missed the whole summer being treated for 3rd degree burns all over his back. Had one killed, one with a broken leg, and one with brain damage from a wreck- racing on a dangerous road. Had one get hurt jumping off a 40 foot bridge into 8 feet of water. I could go on and on.
I actually have a speech that I give at the beginning of every summer entitled "DON'T DO STUPID SH!T!
But it always happens.

I LOVE skateboard kids!
Had a kid set our season record for passing yards once he came off the skateboard and another one become a 2 time State Pole Vault Champ!

I LOVE skateboard kids! Had a kid set our season record for passing yards once he came off the skateboard and another one become a 2 time State Pole Vault Champ! Balance is the single most important attribute for football players, and these kids are not short on it. Plus, they ain't scared of anything.

It does suck losing players to freak accidents, but I don't think that's a reason to ban all players from participating in said events.

I think it's reasonable to ask them to limit hazardous activities inseason. Otherwise, well they are kids.
These are football players. If they were cautious individuals what the he!! would they be doing playing this game in the first place?

Our kids tend to get hurt legally or pregnant girlfriend(s)ly. We had a player a few years ago who had 3 girls pregnant at the same time. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) apparently he was an over achiever. Using the bucket and saucers method of prevention I see.... When everyone talks about these kids doing stupid things...what did you do when you were their age? (Not an attack on anyone.)

We had a player a few years ago who had 3 girls pregnant at the same time. . Was he a stud? I've been trying to implement a breeding system similar to that in our program. We take our best LB and spread his seed to three of the biggest, nastiest, meanest women in town. We do the same with our best DL. We do it every 3 years. The finer details of the program still need to be worked out, but I think I'm on to something.

I think as coaches, by nature, we are control freaks and sometimes fail to see the big picture. I am as guilty as anyone else. But I have learned that you can't really control others, you have to motivate them. They will rebel if you do try to control them, and you will alienate people. Ultimately, you will sink your own ship more so than losing your starting tackle for the year would sink you. Now, during the season, August to November, I agree with you. Football needs to be #1 sport. But with all do respect, I think you a little over the top Air. We have basketball kids that play basketball year round. Am I supposed to tell them that they can't for fear of losing them during my season? How can I make them choose between football and basketball? That has to be their choice. It sucks, but kids will be kids. They run, jump, goof around and......get injured. I wouldn't compare a community softball game to a kid who is jumping a dirt bike off a 30 foot ramp or drinking and driving. Now those are stupid decisions! If its a big deal to the small community, then you have already lost that battle. Use your skills and abilities to overcome this adversity and move on. Show leadership to the rest of the team that probably feels pretty down that they just lost their starting OT. But I would not try to limit a kid from being a kid, whether it is a field day or a softball game. Just my opinion...

Our one rule.....Don't do anything while we are in season. IM basketball starts with two weeks left to go in the season and we inevitably have to suspend at least one person for the last game every year because they don't believe us when we say to stay the heck away for two weeks...that's three, maybe four games. The just don't listen, and it doesn't register that our office overlooks the gym and that we can see them as soon as they walk in. Idiots. Once the season is over we don't really care. We decided that it is easier to p!ss into the wind than try to control what 19-22 year olds do with their time. Some of our guys are pretty darn good at other sports too. I think last year we had the IM softball, basketball and mud volleyball champs were teams completely made football players. I know that crew has won the mud volleyball tournament 3 years in a row. Oh yeah, and they are all pretty good football players too.
