I was at a coaching function a couple of weeks ago and I was standing next to a coach so I introduced myself. Hi, I'm jgordon1 I coach over at XHS. He turns to me and says Hi I'm Coach (Last name) I am the JV DC at XXHS. He was nice enough but, I thought it was kind of wierd at the time that he called himself coach Last name. Then my HC left me a message Hi Coach Gordon This is Coach Last name, blah, blah he does that all the time. I might call him coach in person but I would never leave a message that this is coach gordon to a friend of mine.. What about in school? what do the students call you. At least to my face, 95% call me Mr. Gordon and some call me coach. all my players always call me coach in the class. What about to parents?

I prefer Coach or Coach Orr, however, just about everyone uses Mr. Orr in the building. I personally don't like my first name all that miuch. My wife never calls me Paul, so I prefer Coach Orr and that is usually how I introduce myself.
When I lived in Cosa Rica, I preferred that people called me Pablo instead of Paul.

It always irritates me when someone tells me their title, like ' Coach Dipstick, OC at Clueless High School'. How much more pretentious could someone be.
I just say my name. 99% know you're a coach, so I don't have to say it. Doesn't bother me at all though if other people do.
Most kids, parents, teachers, admin. call me Coach.
That is weird you refered to yourself as jgordon1!
The other coaches I just call by their name, if the kids aren't around.

If I'm at school and making a phone call, even to a coaching friend I stay professional.."Coach Urgen this is Coach Jenkins over at XXHS or whatever.
If Im at a coaching clinic its always, First name, last name, and where I coach. Of the course of the conversation, I figure we'll get to the title crap.

I always think about that when I leave messages with parents. Usually it's about football so I say "this is coach Willey" but I catch myself doing it sometimes in a nonfootball environment. I try to use my first name but sometimes I do the same thing on messages to coaches, and it probably does sound pretentious. My pet peeve is when a coach introduces himself and goes through a schpeel (sp?) about I coach such and such, but I'm a teacher first. I hate that for some reason...

I introduce myself as Jake (my real name). At school I get called Coach__________. When its time to put a parent in their place, I'll have someone introduce me as .... "Mr. Smith, DOCTOR __________ will see you now." Works every time.

Most people call me just by last name. I do not care if my students say Mr. Morris and i refer to most students by last name. I go through 600 students a year so last names are easier for me.
When I talk to other coaches I call them Coach ______. I think most of the time I tell people my first and last name when I introduce myself and then soetimes tell them where I am at. I do not say anything about what I coach unless it comes up.

I have and currently do coach with people that were coaches of mine when I was in school. The hardest thing I is to call these coaches by their first name....it just doesn't feel right. I also call most other coaches I work with coach, and introduce them to my family as Coach whatever.

Stripes, great movie.
I'm old school enough that I want to be called coach. Next to Dad, its my favorite title.
"Mr. McClintock, why do you call him Mr. McClintock and me just Douglas? " "Well Douglas. I guess its because he earned it."

I also call most other coaches I work with coach, and introduce them to my family as Coach whatever. That was really hard for me. To this day its hard for me to call my HC who I then went on to work for "Mike". Its a respect thing. Another coach I worked with and played for I called "CRAIG". Never Coach.... Total respect thing.

I coached with a couple of coaches that had coached me when i was in high school, and even away from football, I couldn't call them by their names. It just seemed too odd.

It's been five years now, so it isn't as weird as it was before, so I call them by their name maybe 20% of the time.

I'm terrible with names so football coaches are great because when I see someone at a clinic and go blank on their name I can always call them coach and they never get upset. Too bad the business world where I spend most of my time isn't similar. If I could just call accountants Accountant...

He also says we didnt win it in 2008 our kids dont work hard and are big headed. LOL This guy posted on this board about how many problems his program has!
