If you were taking over a small school program that once had a great tradition and has recently been down what would you do as soon as you were named the HC?

i tried similar situation once......made plenty of mistakes....
i think it is important to mention the old days.....don't act like it never happened BUT don't stay on the kids about the old days.......the ol "none of you guys are good enough to start on the 1995 team"......they probably hear enough about the old days from brothers, cousins, and uncles........
i guess the best advice is to do things your way.........organize just like you would if old times were good, bad, or whatever.....
one thing i did was get a street near the field named after the coach that was successful many years ago.......it made positive press.......and some of the old timers came around a little more......
whatever you choose, the simple fact is....they were probably better back then because they had better athletes......kids made better grades........eligibility requirements were lighter.......pick your reason......make it your own.....

All the suggestions (the "good ones" )from ALL of the past threads regarding taking over a program would apply including this one from well over 2000 years ago - As you go into battle; Remember to Honor your Ancestors, and also Remember to Honor your Descendent's. Its your program now - get the kids, coaches, parents, and community excited about what you are bringing to the table.

I think the worst thing a new coach can do is come in, scrap the old traditions, and try to start his own up.
Tradition never graduates. You need to make sure you honor the school and its traditions (since they came before you), but you can also implement a few of your own tradition ideas.

I took over a similar situation and I am going into my 5th year now. I think it is important to have a plan. My goal was to win a championship in 4 yrs and we worked on managing the kids we inherited from the other coaches and put most of our focus on the kids who were coming into the program to play for us. Once the 'loser' kids were gone (the ones who did not win) it was much easier to put in new ideas because 'our kids' had open minds and trusted us.
The first thing you have to do is map out a 4 yr plan and figure out who you need to get there and then follow through on it.
