Recruiting,
Being a former small college football coach before I got into high school I am aware of this process. Somethings I have done with great success over the years and more recently at my school:
1. In January I had a power point presentation open to all of my parents with regards to the NCAA and the recruiting process. Went over EVERYTHING. Went over IA, I-AA, II, III. Also reviewed financial aid. I had over 60 parents at the meeting and the response was very positive.
2. Current Juniors - In February and March of their junior years I contact the college coaches about our prospects. This is a follow from the spring (If they played varsity as a 10th grader). The email follows up with grades, camps, visits, dates....
3. Current Sophomores - If a player is currently a sophomore and started I send an introductory email. Little background on the player and so forth. Who ever responds back to any of my emails I follow that up with a packet (Transcripts, SATs and 2 game DVDs).
Now here is what I did that I think can help a lot coaches - This was hard and it took a couple of days but I think it was worth it. I live in VA so identified about 140 schools within a 500 mile radius or so. I focused the following football conferences:
I-AA
Ivy League
Patriot League
CAA
Northeast
MEAC
Big South
D-II
PSAC
WVIAC
CIAA
South (wingate, tusculum)
Gulf Coast (Valdosta State..)
Northeast 10
D-III
Centennial
MAAC
Few others
What I did is go to each web site copy the head coach and the recruiting coordinator and made one HUGE email distribution - College Coaches Spring 2009. Again over 140 colleges on there mostly I-AA & II. Now two of my current juniors have web site with a link (They bought this before I was hired) so I do a write up on each kid and forward it to all of the schools... I BC the parents every time I do this. Whenever a school responds (Can i get tape or anything) I forward that to the parents VIA email.. They are always in the loop.
We just ordered APEX System and by the end of the spring we plan to have all of our games on APEX and have our web site up as well. We will create a data base of games and hi-lights and pass on the password to all college coaches.
My point behind this is we always hear about parents who complain that their kids are not getting recruited or the coach does not "market" my son. By doing this they are in constant contact and every time you send an email they are copied as well. You can cover your behind. By the time the kid is a senior you would have sent out a ton of emails and tapes across the country. No way a parent could say you did not help their kid. I give a copy of the list of all of the colleges contacted to the parents as well.
If out of 100 scholarship programs I do not get a "bite" on a kid then we know by the September of his Senior year we start to focus on D-III schools and some academic money. Again it is a lot of work to go to each web site and copy the coaches email and the recruiting coordinator... And it does take time but in the long run once you have that data base it is very easy to make contacts for players. I just found this to be very useful and helpful.
If anyone out there has some good ideas or does some "different or neat things" with recruiting I would love to hear it.
