I'm just a student manager and a freshman and a half at UConn but I learned a lot my first season. I hate how football is barely relevant to 90% of the campus and 85% of the state. My friend goes to school at Florida International, another DI school and works as the head equipment manager and can probably find me a spot no problem. I think I have a good thing going here but I wish it was football all year long, I figured if I transferred down there, thats what it would be like. Any suggestions? Also, I've considered asking my boss if he can pull a string or 2 and see if he would be able to get me a job at a more prestigious school such as FSU, Florida, Miami. Thanks for everything.

Here's all I know...I know I personally could not have moved from up north to Florida anywhere at 20,21,22 years of age and kept any hopes of passing any classes, even going to any classes less they were held on the beach at halftime of the bikini volleyball tournament. I was too much of a skirt chaser to be put in an overloaded environment...or so my wife would say...I don't know what she's talking about...that's how I got her. Women??  But I hear ya, you know...that's a tough deal...UConn is an up and coming program, football wise I think you may be better served to stay right where you're at, Florida International isn't exactly a powerhouse program but then again I think Dave McMichael is a good dude, he recruits our area so I'm probably a little bias. Coach Mac! I served as his assistant this year working with TE's. Very nice guy. Yeah I'm thinking I would transfer in after Fall '09 so I'd start classes after football is over in Spring '10. That way I wouldn't be overloaded with my job and women... oh yeah and class  |

They are constantly just ripping apart the team in the school newspaper. It's a shame that they don't realize how much this program has grown in the past decade. |

I have to say, I think you'll find a pretty apathetic student body ANYWHERE you go. Not many college students follow the football program's ups and downs all that obsessively; alums and other fans do that, but students for the most part don't.
Also re. your quote: the student paper doesn't necessarily represent the views of the student body. I went to a hockey school -- as in, hockey was our only D-I sport aside from women's soccer -- with a very small enrollment, a little under 2,000 kids. There were about 600 seats in the student section at the arena, which was ALWAYS sold out, and there was a very lively trade in tickets.
I mean, by any standard, hockey was a major social event at our school. But it hardly got any coverage in the student paper. Student newspapers are weird that way. Don't let the Daily Fishwrapper get you down. Oh, and, uh, for actual advice: I'd say stay up in Connecticut. You already know the people there, and you can build on the relationships you've established.

There is a part of the "Daily Campus" newspaper that is called the "Instant Daily" where students instant message or text something to the paper, the funny things are usually printed. Well the running joke that is often printed is "West Virginia just scored again..." and "Pitt Basketball is making UConn basketball look like UConn football"... I hate these d-bags. It's all in good fun though I guess, the student section is weak at our games. Plus I HATE cold weather and I lived up north for my entire life. We played down at USF and boy did I enjoy it, until kickoff. Thanks for everyone's advice. |

Hustle and Heart,
I have lived In Conn.(When Younger) and now in South FL. Football is much more prevalent here...but where FIU is located it probably is not as important to the student body as say soccer.
You should also take into consideration that you are at and working with a winning succsessfull and growing program. FIU is growing also, but is not in Uconns class yet, and may never be. If you are learning from a good staff, remember the grass is not always greener.
Just a thought.

Stay.
Focus on finishing your degree, continue as student manager- those guys crap more football knowledge than most people have- ABSORB all you can from them.
Pick up a GA position after you graduate and go from there. You have a wonderful opportunity that could be blown if you aren't patient- TRUST ME...you'll regret it if you leave and it doesn't work out- I've been there.
And to be honest- who cares if the student body/state cares about football? Edsall's got you guys going, you're getting higher caliber recruits, short of winning a BCS bowl game I don't know what more they want?

What I would do is stay where your at and if you want to have football stuff to do year round I would go to one of the GAs and ask if you can help them with their work. You get to be around football year round and develop more contact with the coaches.

Also, if your wanting to learn football year round. I suggest finding some local colleges or even the coaches at UConn and asking if you can meet with one of the position coaches just to pick their brain.

It is ALL about networking and the luck of the draw. Will the people YOU satellite with move up (and therefore you satellite up with them). Being at "x" school doesn't really change it too much, but being at "X" level does matter a bit. It isn't a hard and fast rule, but I have noticed that coaches tend to circulate in certain levels, or get pigeonholed in certain levels due to networking/regions due to recruiting.
