How do you guys split up your week and practices?
Here is what I do and would love to see some more examples or hear thoughts...
I am also looking for details/specifics of how you all structure your split practice days of offense and defense...
FRIDAY GAME – following a Friday game
SATURDAY Sweats CONDITIONING AND LIFT WEIGHTS GAME FILM REVIEW AND ANALYSIS
MONDAY Full pads Lunch films SPECIAL FORCES AND DEFENSIVE EMPHASIS PRACTICE KICK OFF AND KICK OFF RETURN GASSERS
TUESDAY Full pads Lunch films SPECIAL FORCES AND OFFENSIVE EMPHASIS PRACTICE PUNT AND PUNT RETURN LIFT WEIGHTS

Coach we do just about the same thing except we do punt on Mondays. On Thursdays we go in shells to practice defense and special teams then we take off our uppers and run approx 50 offensive plays on air. Being a DC its tough to scramble to get ready for Mondays but it's worth it. On Tuesday even though its OFF emphaisis we still get about 20 min of Def

On the side of equipment, when I helped my old HS out and when I played there, it was full pads until walk through Thursday, where we did shells. Saturday we stretched without pads.
At the school I work at now, Monday depends on the coaches feel. Usually its pads. This is primarily our game plan day. Physical Practice is shorter with an emphasis on film and the plan for the week taking up 30 minutes or so before hand. Tuesday and Wednesday are full go. Thursday is again shells.

What we've always done was use the same coaches for Varsity and JV. While the Varsity does their defensive INDY, the JV does offensive INDY. This way every player learns both offense and defense. When it comes to team time, the we try to match up best on best as much as we can. However, there are going to be some JV guys going against Varsity ones, but that just makes them tougher. The exception is the OL/DL. We platoon those guys so they get double INDY time. As far as reps during team time, 1st Varsity gets 4 reps, 2nd Varsity gets 3 reps, 1st JV gets 3 reps, and 2nd JV gets 2 reps.
As far as Special teams goes, we go 4 periods every practice--2 for say punt team/2 for punt block/return. Another period at the end of practice is PAT/FG. This equates to 25 minutes each practice.
Mondays (shells) are more or less a day to correct mistakes and show the game plan for the next opponent. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are full pads petal to the metal, full throttle practices, high intensity. Thursdays are helmets but we have a mock game on air that lasts from 1 to 1.5 hours.

We are thinking of giving the players off on Saturday, a lot of our players have to work, especially in this economy. Then practice a normal monday, then lft / watch films and provide them dinner, for staying so late. Do you see any real set backs of not coming in on Saturday to watch films or condition?

Wednesday - Full Pads (At our school we have a mandatory staff-development every wednesday after school that NOBODY can miss... NO EXCEPTIONS! We have to make this our shortest practice because we start an hour late every Wed) 1) Review Punt & PR, FG & Block (LIVE) 2) Kickoff & KOR (LIVE) 3) Review Defensive Scouting Report (Meeting) 4) Review Offensive Scouting Report (Meeting)

We are thinking of giving the players off on Saturday, a lot of our players have to work, especially in this economy. Then practice a normal monday, then lft / watch films and provide them dinner, for staying so late. Do you see any real set backs of not coming in on Saturday to watch films or condition? If the kids don't come in on saturday for film, when are you going to teach them from their mistakes during games? If you are not platooning, then most of your kids are on the field all the time, so Fridays almost no coaching can really get done because the kids are on the field the whole time. The only time they can really stop and learn anything from the games is from the film. Our first year at this school we didn't do the saturday thing either because of the same reasons you said. Looked back and noticed that the mistakes being made in weeks 1 & 2 were the same mistakes being made in weeks 9 & 10 because even though we drilled them in practice, the kids "thought" they were doing it, but never saw that they weren't... We fixed that in a way this last season. On sunday mornings anybody who brought $5 to the school would come over to my house and my fiance would cook them a big breakfast (bacon, eggs, pancakes, etc...) while we would go over Friday nights game. Then we would break and eat breakfast. After breakfast, we would sit down and watch film from our next opponent for about an hour. Then I'd let them swim in the pool or play my PS3 for about another hour, then we cook them a big spaghetti lunch. Had about 10-15 kids every sunday (8-11 Varsity, 2-4 JV), and the money they bring just paid for all the food. Many of the kids we have are FAR below the poverty line, so $5 for two huge meals is a pretty good deal. This year we are still gonna do that, but we are going to make it mandatory that they come to at least one of them. If they are not there on saturday at the school, then they better be at my house on sunday. That way, none of them can magically have "an emergency" 2 days in a row and skip out.

Tuesday (full pads): Offense+STs Wed (full pads): Defense + STs Thursday (no pads): weights, walk-throughs, 2-minute.

Wednesdays 3:00 dress 3:10 stretch and form run 3:20 tackle 3:30 Indy defense 4:00-5:00 Oline super scheme session 4:00-5:00 7v7 5:00 punt and fake punt 5:10 field goal 5:20 team defense vs scout O 5:50 team offense 6:15 conditioning
