Have you ever thought that we all take this coaching stuff way to seriously?
Not just coaches, but fan too? I mean, wow , sometimes good people go completely nuts over hs football.

Good question. I've been thinking about this issue for a long time. This summer our wrestling coach wants his kids to attend a wrestling camp and open wrestling days, our basketball coach wants his boys to attend a basketball camp and 2 separate nights of open gym, our football coach wants his players to attend a football camp, lift wts 3 days a week, attend speed and agility 2 days a week and a 7 on 7 night. Now we have summer HS baseball and our baseball coach would like to have these same kids participate in his sport. We are not at big school and need every kid to participate. If you don't do these activities during the summer anymore it seams you can't compete because your opponents are! When do these kids have a summer? When do they get a break? Do you think this might be why kids are burnt out and don't go out for the sport? This I hope will be a good topic of discussion and will be interested in other coaches thoughts.

Yes, i do think that we do, on the other hand anything worthwhile is worth taking serious. I don't golf, play BB, go on fancy vacations, play video games, attend sporting events. coaching is my hobby my passion, ...My wife thinks I am having an online affair because I am on the board all the time. She is even starting to know some of the Nicknames. We watched Outlaw Josey Wales the other day in honor of OJW

the problem is here
the rest of our education system has gone to hell
feeling means more than doing
wanting means more than doing
administrators are scared of doing what is right and what is best for the kids because they don't want to get sued by the trial lawyers

I think there are too many coaches that do not take this serious enough. I know a ton of HS coaches that do not do the amount of research and such that I do. I am not saying I am better than them. I have goals and to reach those goals I know I need to take this seriously.
Now I know I spend a huge amount of time and resources on getting better. It might not be healthy. This is what I do and is a huge part of who I am so I expect to take it seriously.

I'm on this board all day and night, and when I'm not on here or asleep, I'm reading books on coaching, and I don't even have a team yet. Of course I take it too seriously  The thing about all the offseason stuff overwhelming the kids raises a good point. Every coach wants "their" athletes to be 100% committed to "their program", when most of these kids just want to play ball with their friends. Can you really blame a 16 year old kid for not wanting to lift when he's tied up with another sport 5 days a week AND is holding down a part time job in the evenings too AND has 2 hours of homework to take care of? The thing is, if you don't have them work at it year round, you'll never beat the top programs who do. With this mentality, it seems like more and more schools, especially small and mid-sized ones, have to prioritize and choose if they're going to define themselves as a football school, a basketball school, etc if they want to be competitive. Players frequently have to do the same, if they want to get recruited. Yet when they lose in those other sports, everyone still blames the coaches because "it's obvious they have the athletes!" I remember when I was in school, our basketball team was playing for the regional championship (one notch below the state tourney at the time) against our district rival. When their players came out on the court, half of them were already sweaty and looked tired. It turned out their baseball coach, who's in the state HOF and even had that small rural program ranked nationally at the time, insisted all his players come out for 2 hours of baseball conditioning earlier that afternoon. He'd given the basketball coach an earful just for suggesting they be exused. Nothing, not even the postseason in another sport, was going to get in the way of his team's offseason prep! His own son was the starting PF on that basketball team. Our team won by a slim margin, but that probably would have never happened if it hadn't been for the baseball coach, who won the state again that year IIRC. Personally, I'm waiting for someone to invent the "lazy man's system." Just have the kids show up out of shape in August, install the system in 2 hrs of practice, win 10-14 games with it, then take it easy until August rolls around again  |

My goal is to "out coach" anyone I play against. And since there are some quality people we go up against, I have my work cut out for me.
I also tell my wife, "I'm a teacher and a coach. That is my job. Some people work in a cubicle or operate machinary. I teach and coach". Translation.....I take my JOB seriously. And I know I out work a lot of my colleagues at school. I will not apologize for that....EVER!!!
What is wrong with being good? That sounds cocky, but I'm just saying. Is there something wrong with striving to be the best? Do I have to apologize for our program winning 80% of our football games since 1985?
How did we get there? Because we take things very seriously.

to keep in perspective when relating to our players ....
they (the kids) will never take football as seriously as we do. so, our job is to get them to approach it in such a manner that they take it more seriously than they currently do.

Excellent point Huey. My goal has always been to have the kids that buy in become leaders... The kids on the fence to buy in.... and the kids that are not with us to at least get on the fence. |

Bottom line, what is this doing to your family, I have been at this for 19 years, plus 3 years as a volunteer coach. I am like you guys, read it, study it,live it. But then I was diagnosed with Parkinson's. We still go overboard, but if the kid is with the basketball team, that's okay, if he is baseballing, thats great. They still have time to hit the weight room, but that is an easy sell because it will make them better in everything else, even the classroom (Hopefully)
BUT DON"T YOU DARE CAUSE IT TO HURT YOUR FAMILY TIME, when you come home those little ones want to be with you. Good lord I can even make my wife laugh enough to be palatable. I have just seen coaches who work their butts off but don't take the same passion with their families. I was one of them and then the good Lord blessed me with this disease. Things haven't looked the same since. Yes we are still football crazy, I read all your stuff, but when the girls are asleep, or if they are watching curious george (for the one billionth time)and they are in their mother's lap.
Enjoy the game, I used to have my day ruined when a kid didn't show up that I needed, and I would have 38 show up that day in the weightroom.. Sound familiar my fellow brothers. Control what you can control, leave the rest to God, and take your family somewhere.
When they told me what I had, I didn't think of any football, i just asked God to let me be able to walk when my 3 year old graduates from college. Never let the seriousness of the game effect what is really important.

I agree with Coach Huey.
I also have found a place where I will coach...most likely...forever. The roots run deep with everything...family, football, etc.
I, DEFINATELY, make time for my family. I'll be coaching both my boys baseball teams this spring. During the season I stay up till 3am doing film after games so I can go to all of the games my boys have on Saturday.
I feel like I have the balance I need. I feel I know my niche. This allows me to know how "serious" I can be.
Lastly, I feel like coaching football at the pace I go will only last for so long. On my messageboard I've already posted the year I'm going to retire from the game. I'm 36 and my youngest son is 6. If he goes on to play I will be "hangin them up" after his last game in 2020. That will be my 29th year of coaching. At the rate I go as a coach...A) I hope I can make it to 2020. B) I think that 29 years will be enough.

I've also thought a lot about how much is asked of kids nowadays in the "offseasons"
At first I wanted to say it was too much..............but really, I think that was me saying I wanted it/coaching to be easier...........
The game is what it is.
If kids weren't doing these things what would they be doing? PROBABLY nothing as constructive and positive.
IMO, the problem with people taking things way too seriously is a trickle down ramification of the ridiciulous money that is paid to athletes and coaches (and gambling). Catch 22 however is all that money attracts the best athletes and that creates the interest our kids have to participate in sports.

I've had 38 straight years of football as a player and a coach, but maybe it's just a phase I'm going through. Seriously, I see coaching as my calling in life. It's what I was meant to do, and I take it very seriously. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, as long as you have your priorities right. |

Since I am the one who posted this let me say that I take coaching very seriously, winning is something very important to me and my family. I want my kids to compete every single day. With that in mind, I ask for exactly 30 minutes four times a week all off season. Then as we get to spring we want to see the kids for a two week mini camp and then all summer with open gyms, 7v7 and special position specific training clinics with their position coaches.
I spent all day today (a snow day again) watching game film, not my own but game film from teams around the country who run what we run. Then I called my assistants and set up time to meet with them at their leisure.
Now I am reading a book on special teams. yes, I take coaching and winning very seriously, thats not really my point. What is my point is that relationships are often ruined because of winning and losing. . kids who quit on us, parents who do not buy in, coaches who undermine trying to take your job etc. Character really is revealed through football.

Well....I should be up to post 49 or so? How many more will it take to become a Junkie!! Just kidding here. I'm 51 years old and have been coaching seance 1981. Oh my God that's like 28 years. My how time flies. I take this job as serious now as I did when I 1st started. I'm grateful to have found this web site this summer. I look at it a least 3 times a day. I've learned a ton from reading the many posts on the site. I don't post much but I do PM quite a few of the coaches on here. I feel that I get a much more in depth answer when I do this. I'm not a guru by any mean and just enjoy looking at what others have to say. Don't take my previous post as a touchy feely type of response. We demanded from the start that our players put in the time it takes to be a good athlete. Our program has come a long way seance I took over 6 years ago. Great coaching staff in place with the players understanding the commitment it takes to become a winner. I'm spending every minute or the day trying to recruit those kids out of the hallways and get the kids I have to climb and jump over that fence. Sorry for rambling.

This is a calling, a way of life.
If your not taking it seriously, maybe you should be doing something else?
Its not a hobby. It's not x's and o's, its dealing with young men's lives. Maybe the guys who question wether it is worth the time are asking the wrong question.
Is trying to win games worth the time and effort? No.
Is making an impact on young men's lives worth it? I think we all know the answer.

I do not think we take coaching too seriously. Do we sometimes take the results of a game to seriously? I think so. Someone just stated coaching is a calling. I really believe this. I have had the opportunity to see exactly what it truly means to be a coach due to a tragic even in my life within the last few weeks. To see our players respond in the way they did touched me in a way that I can't even begin to describe. Hearing some of the things they said to me truly affirmed to me that coaching is a calling that allows us to touch the lives of young men in ways we may not even realize. Sometimes we get caught up in coaching and allow it to over run our lives, I have been there when you don't feel like getting out of bed after a bad loss or let a season ending loss bug us for weeks. Trust me I hate to loose as much as anyone and it eats at me when we do. A couple years in a row we lost in the playoffs after undefeated seasons and the seniors took it hard as they usually do. They were crying and all that. I like to tell them that if this is the worst thing that ever happens to you in your life then you will have lead a blessed life. Let it hurt and bug you but don't let it consume you. An old coach from this area shared a story at a FCA-type event. Basically he said he got a letter from a player he hadn't heard from since the player graduated HS 25 years earlier. He told his coach he had cancer and it was in remission or whatever. The player told the coach that the one thing that kept him going during his treatments was the sayings the old coach use to use at practice and he remembered the coach saying never quit always fight and never give up. That was all he would think of and it's what got him through. Do we take the wins and losses to serious some times.....Yes. Do we take the effect we have on our players lives to seriously....I don't think we even get close to taking that as seriously as we should. |

mitch, im with you. on a personal note.... i recently had my second child (out of 3 total) get diagnosed with autism. his older brother also is autistic. those of you familiar with autism can imagine the strain on me and my family. i often feel that maybe i need to spend more time with them and not as much time "working". but then i really reflected on it and came to the conclusion.... football is such a huge fabric of WHO i am as a person.... would it be wise to abandon it? what good could i really be to my family if i have an enormous empty space within me? of course, they will always come first, period. but i think my ultimate challenge is to be the father that they need and still remain the person that i am (in other words, a football guy).
