South Florida: Offensive coordinator Greg Gregory was told last Saturday night that he was “relieved from his duties as offensive coordinator” after Gregory told head coach Jim Leavitt he was going to interview at Florida for the tight ends position. Leavitt did not use the word “fired.” As of now, Leavitt still considers Gregory a member of his staff.
Interesting situation here. clearly he is being punished for engaging in a capitalistic free trade society. I say leavitt etiher fires him or gives him his job back

How can you have your OC interviewing of a TE's job.. What does this say to your recruits? If he was interviewing for the OC position it would be different. it might even be different if he was interviewing for the oline job. A TE job is generally the lowest job at those big schools unless it is combined w/ STC which it is not at UF. an assistant serves at the wishes of the HC. I think he is still lucky to have his job. If you want to play in the big sand box w/ the big boys watch your a$$. Those guys understand what they are doing. He thought he could advance his career quicker. Look at Hevesy, he goes from Te coach at UF to Oline MSU. IMO, Gregory took a chance and apparently lost.

I thought I read somewhere that at the pro level (basically what Florida is) the TE's guy is major involved in game planning because he must know blocking schemes, protections and pass schemes. I thought QB coaches and TE coaches are the guys usually promoted to OC.

Still.. perception is reality. If you are in big time football.. you are trying to get to the top..money helps but not really the overiding factor in most cases. IMO, as I said above, Gregory took a chance that he thought was better for his career, apparently it wasn't...again IMHO, the big boys use money to keep score. really.... there are asst coaches making over 500,000 now.. I make more than you... my assts are the best paid. etc It is now millions but it just as well could be 1000's. or what have you. these guys are alpha males and just want more than what you have. BTW same goes with the stadium arms race. MY Pee Pee is bigger than yours

I would rather be an assistant with Meyer than an OC most places. But I can't say if Gregory did the right thing or not.

Seriously...If I had a nice Asst coach job that paid me 75k a year....I'd take it and never leave. Especially if I was happy where I was at. Are you listening college coaches? This guy here can be had at bargain basement prices, and if you act now, I'll throw in a set of Ginsu Knives.

I know you were being tongue in cheek, but you have to remember that many if not most coaches at the college level are not leaving by choice. Coaching without teaching is a "get it while you can" business..not a 30 year long haul.

I dont understand why you would do this... If you can turn USF into an offensive power? At some point you will have a chance to get Head job at a UF. Just worry about the job you have..... Just do your job and the rest will work its self out.

It might be in some places, but in the SEC there are coordinators making $250K-$400K, and position coaches making $100K. I imagine he difference in the pay at South Florida, and Florida would likely double his pay in taking a demotion from OC to TE coach.

Same with the other BCS schools. Maybe a total of 500-600 coaches sniffing that kind of salary. Every other football coach in the country......is why i used the percentages i chose. Gary Crowton and I were discussing this a few years ago...when I asked if he was looking to get a Header position. His reply "I get paid a $^load and I don't need to worry about all that other stuff here at LSU. I would have to think long and hard about that. Contrast that with a coach at Nicholls State who has to take a H.S job because he has a second kid and can't afford to be a college coach. 75,000 is astronomically higher than most college football coaches get.

I once had a coach tell me "if you get a chance to go from coaching at a school whose name is a direction followed by a state to a school whose name is just a state, do it!"
