Coaches,
Do any of you have a phrase or words that you say before hitting the field.
I know so teams will pray or say the hail Mary, I am looking for words that we as a team can say together before hitting the field.
Just wondering if any of you had a solid one to share, something that we could teach the kids and then all say together, something more than just 1 or 2 words.
Thanks.

I as a player had a HC that had all of us get on a knee and grab each others hand and we all would say 3 different positive affirmations. The HC would say it and then in unison all the players would repeat it three times. After the 3rd one the HC would say "Beat the Vikings" or whatever the mascot was of the opponent. 1st Affirmation- 1/2/3 2nd Affirmation- 1/2/3 3rd Affirmation- 1/2/3 Beat the ______-1/2/3 Then we hit the field for the national anthem and we were off and running. I felt it put every player into the right mind set.
I will say this, when you have 50+ players speaking in unison it sounds AWESOME, I always got the chills when we did this.

Sure can!
I will make a big play! I will make a big play! I will make a big play!
The moment I live in is now! The moment I live in is now! The moment I live in is now!
I will leave it on the field! I will leave it on the field! I will leave it on the field!
We love and care for each other! We love and care for each other! We love and care for each other!
Beat the "Panthers"! Beat the "Panthers"! Beat the "Panthers"!

I am surprised you as public employees are able to lead a team in prayer.

i got something form my college strength coach that we used at my last school. Together we stand Together we fall All for one One for all
I would say one line then the players would repeat it. we'd go through it three times with my voice getting louder or quieter based on the tone we wanted to set, the kids would repeat the tone. We'd always end with me saying, "We are.." and the kids would respond loudly "HRA". Pretty cool. One year the team even made it their own w/ a psuedo rap of it they said when walking to the field from the locker room.
I teach at a public school now, and our HC prays w/ the team before the game.

Took this one from the Ohio State Buckeyes and Jim Tressell. As we approach the field, our arms are all locked in rows of 10. As we are about to take the field our team pauses to recite a poem by Edward Everett Hale (arms still locked).
"I Am Only One" I am only one, but I am one. I can't do everything, but I can do something. And what I can do, I ought to do. And what I ought to do, by the grace of God, I shall do.
The kids absolutely love it! They know what the poem means because we have interpreted and explained it to the kids. It has since become one of our great traditions.

An HRA rap? Abe you know why, coming from where I do, I find that hilarious. FWIW we also say a pregame prayer.

Invictus (Out of the Night That Covers Me)
Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
We are only a 9-10 year old Youth team but this is our tradition. The kids LOVE this. When you explain the story and meaning they go wild with this pregame. Each week a different kid leads that had an exceptional week. These are amazingly powerful words after the kids are made aware of what they mean and what was going on. I have always loved it and am glad the kids get it.

Effort, Execution, Enthusiasm. Repeat as many times as necessary. A little louder each time.
We are a Christian school and I think this year we may recite Colossians 3:23 before each game and before each practice because I really want more than anything for us to live this verse out this year.
Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men
I like this verse because it talks about What to do (Whatever you do, every play, supporting your team, warm ups etc. )
How we are to do it (With all our heart. Full focus, full effort, doing things right)
and Why we do it (To give a gift to the Lord, to Glorify him, not to please ourselves. please others, or glorify ourselves)

Out of curiousity, how did the pre-game prayer traditions start? Have you been approached about it at any point?
We do the "Ten Commandments" before the team walks out to the field. I can't recall them off-hand, but I'll try to dig them up.

yeah the HRA rap is pretty funny. for the rest of you, HRA is a private school that I used to caoch at that was made up almost completly of upper middle class white students. very little racial diversity. it was actually one of my prouder moments. I felt like the kids were taking a little ownership over the program. unfortunately it didn't last long. one of the kids who made it up quit the next year to focus on basketball...
