Hey Coaches,
I've been coaching for about 6 years was a OC for 4 and a HC for 2 back as a coordinator now. Unfortunately, I have had very little "mentorship" during that time, most things I have learned I have done on my own, hours reading, watching, and picking other peoples brains. I always go by, if you think you know everything, then you shouldn't be coaching ..I am not sure if this question should be geared towards the Off Forum or another, but thought I would post it here.
Any good articles, video, lectures, that discuss film break down? I know what I look for when looking at an opponent, or my guys, but I always feel that I am not where I want to be or I am not looking at it the way I am suppose to. I have been fortunate so far winning football games, but I still feel lost at times.
Thanks Coaches,
Coach T

It is great, but you need to keep in mind it was written for a different era. The concepts apply, but the specifics are out of date. It is shameful that there really aren't many good scouting books out there.

I read Belicheck's book and I did not find too helpful. I got it through interlibrary loan.

Honestly, I dont think any method of breaking down film is effective if you can't utilize it properly. I've used a dozen different forms, tried it so many ways, but then it ends up being a TON of information that requires much more analysis to decipher. I think I finally have stolen about 5 ideas and put it into one method I like.

Well I hate the sheets that just have D and D, play, formation, etc. because you have to transribe everything. So I have formation sheets that I give to one guy and he charts D and D on that sheet for that formation and field position. So we're still charting it all, but basically I've jumped ahead a step.
The other thing is later in the season I came up with a new call sheet for a game that I have their favorites by D and D, field pos. etc. While he's charting his sheets by formation, I'm charting it right onto the template of the next week's call sheet. That way I am not going from this sheet to this sheet to this sheet. I have it by formation where I can see everything I want and I have it in favorites where I'm tallying. One sheet is SO specific with formation, play, and D and D that I can refer to that easily. The other sheet is SO specific to D and D regardless of formation.
So I am not going to get as bogged down with sorting it out. I've presorted what I want and created the templates to do that. By process of charting I've eliminated my most frustrating step which is to put the math to it.
Now my offseason goal is to get those sheets laid out in Excell so I can sort easier and eliminate one more step.

That seems to be the problem I have. I think I overload myself with so much information and paperwork, that I have yet to figure out a way to simplify my methods and make it more efficient.

i have the play charting on an excel sheet, and a seperate sheet with pivot tables that basically provides a summary of the data, whatever you want - can mix and match variables such as D&D, run/pass, area of the field, formation, play direction, etc. still a data overload though but working on trimming it down to something useable.
