Do you guys pay your "Volunteer Coaches" or are they just that in Volunteers?

We have both.
We have two volunteers who pretty much take on the duties of a regular stipened coach.
We fundraise a full stipend ($3300) for them but in the eyes of the district they are "volunteers".
We have three others who put in time only during the season and we'll fund raise a little money to help them out. $500 to $700.
Our other seven are full time stipend guys.
The only TRUE volunteer guys we have (those receiving nothing) are people who work our game and go out and scout for us.

I have 5 volunteers on my staff. Very lucky to have them. I pay them money for summer camp. Then try to get them filming money. Lastly I get them coaching shirts and try to take care of them with food whenever I can. It is hard to pay for volunteers, but I try to treat them the best I can. They are a huge part of our program!

I am a volunteer coach at the middle school where I played while I am finishing college. I got two shirts and loads of experience from helping. I was asked about helping again next year, go I guess I did a fair job.

I've volunteered for my whole career now. I'm only a Junior in college, but I've been lucky enough to work myself up to some varsity press box experience this year. I usually have been treated really well.

We had a single volunteer coach this year whom (or is it who, I'm never sure) I paid about $500 from my stipend. The situation's a little different though; we're both still in college and he drove 90 minutes one way, three days a week, to be there. He's been a close friend since we were juniors in high school and I knew I could trust him with anything. I wanted him to know he was appreciated. Plus he more than earned his pay.

Our entire staff of 9 coaches is volunteer and only 1 is a teacher at the school. None of us get a stipend not even the teacher.

Depends on how much time they put in. If a guy would be there everyday and put in the equal amount of time, I'd do my darndest to keep that guy by giving him as much as I could muster (money, clothing, food, etc). Don't put in the time and just want free stuff? Not happening.
I've had some really bad experiences with "volunteer" coaches the past couple years. Mostly, they want to get paid, they want power, they want to look important on Fri nights, but they don't want to put in any grunt work (summer stuff, breaking down film, etc) or even show up for practice half the time. I have no need for these people.
I firmly believe there IS such a thing as too many coaches on staff. I'd rather have four dedicated only than four dedicated and another 5 who are kinda dedicated.

Just ended my second year as a volunteer. Last year (Jr.High) I did not expect a stipend or anything, but the Header got the school to get me a stipend because I busted my but. This past year (Frosh DC) I did not get anything, but the Header gave me a gift card, and anything he can. He even is helping me get my first college job next fall.

Finished my first season as a volunteer, am taking classes in college right now so i cant really be there about half the time, but came in a couple afternoons a week for practice, game night, saturday morning, and helped out. didnt get paid or anything, but the experience is pretty valuable, and i dont have to travel far or anything.

Four seasons of 'volunteer' coaching, been paid a grand sum of $500 and a bunch of swag. Were I getting a legitimate stipend, it'd all go back to the team in the form of T-shirts and highlight dvds, etc.

I just finished my 7th year as an assitant coach (4 different programs) and all but two of those years I was considered a volunteer, but I've received a stipend every year I've been a coach. The bad thing is after I received one my first year I came to expect it so I may have been in trouble if I didn't get it!!!
In terms of duties, I put in the same amount of time and had the same expectations from the HC as the paid guys. A lot of times in IL, at least based on my experience, there really isn't a difference between "volunteer" and "paid". The program is simply allowed a certain number of "paid" assistants so they have to seek other means to pay the "volunteers".
